Information: The Cater Cemetery is located seven miles southeast of Kirksville. It has been a burial ground almost 122 years. It was known as the Bear Creek Cemetery until the Cater Church was built in 1896.

The land for Bear Creek Cemetery was deeded from the Adair County Farm to the Board of Trustees, Henry M. Barnes, Charles F. Hollenbeck and Joish Hibbards on October 4, 1886.

After it became known as the Cater Cemetery, the families and neighbors took care of the Cemetery until May 1, 1948, when a group of interested people met and organized the Cater Cemetery Association. It had long been the dream of several who had loved ones buried at the Cemetery to raise money to invest with the income to provide perpetual care. In 1948 perpetual care was established. Trustees at the time were D. W. Hollenbeck, Hayward Duffie, Ora Vaughn, Mrs. Clifton Monroe, and Mrs. John Curry.

In November 1963, by-laws were adopted, and it became the Cater Cemetery Association, Incorporated. Trustees at that time were Hayward Duffie, Ollin A. Drennan, Mrs. Clifton Monroe, and Roe Hollenbeck.

The Cater Cemetery Association, Incorporated, holds its annual meeting the Sunday before Memorial Day.

The present officers are: President, Ruth Barnett; Vice-President, Glen Gerhold; Treasurer, Mrs. Clifton Moore; Secretary, Roe Hollenbeck.

Officers of Cater Cemetery who have families buried there are: President, Ruth Barnett (3 generations); Vice-president, Glen Gerhold (2 generations); Treasurer, Mrs. Clifton Monroe (2 generations); and Secretary, Roe Hollenbeck has 2 generations of his family there.

Information copied from stones and submitted by Mrs. Vernon (Bonnie) Noe, Mrs. George (Flo) Johnson, Mrs. Roe (Marjorie) Hollenbeck, Mrs. Clifton (Vandie) Monroe and Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Barnett." [1]
