Wellbeloved brother, I recommend myself heartily to you, furthermore informing you that the 13th day of April in the year abovesaid, I Robard Cely have received from William Eston, mercer of London, £12 sterling to pay at Antwerp at the Sinksen market the 24th day of June, for every noble of 6s 8d sterling, 7s 10d Flemish, and I pray you to deliver to the said Wylliam Eston £12 sterling at the same rate, taking a bill from his hand to pay at London the said £12 at a day as long after ‘the day’ as I took the money up before. In witness hereof I set my seal at London the 13th day of April.
By Robard Cely.
Dorse: To George Cely.
Notes
This is a note for a double exchange, one in Antwerp, the other in London, which is effectively a short term loan with no interest. The advantage for both parties is the purchase of the other currency.
Sencyon marte: Sinksen market. A merket held in Antwerp at Whitsun.
