The Chequers was a pub located at 60 High Street in Maldon. According to the Lost Pubs Project, which gives the address as 62 High Street, it has been demolished and replaced by a bank branch.

Known licence transfers (and other licensing business):

  • 10 Sept 1872: "The following innkeepers applied for an extension of time during the fair: ...Mr. Rudrum, Chequers, until twelve on Friday and Saturday… Mr. Saunders, of the Dolphin, and Mr. Rudrum, of the Chequers, who had applied, through Mr. Evans, for permission to use bagatelle boards in their houses, received authority so to do… Mr. Rudrum, of the Chequers, also asked whether he should be allowed to carry on dancing at his house as before in the nights of the fair...The Mayor stated that the application would be granted, but the music and dancing must be so conducted as not to be a nuisance to the neighbours, and he must be very particular that no improper characters were admitted..."[1]
  • 20 May 1879: "TRANSFER.--Mr. Wm. Sargent applied for a permanent transfer of the licence of the Chequers Inn to himself.--Ernest King, from the office of Messrs. Digby and Evans, proved service of the requisite notices, and the bench granted the application."[2]
  • 6 May 1890: "Chequers Inn.--The licence of this house was temporarily transferred from Chas. Sargent to John Henry Spurway, late of the Army and Navy, Camberwell."[3]
  • 24 Aug 1897: "Licence Transfers.--At the Borough Bench, on Tuesday, before J. C. Float (Mayor) and L. Bentall, Esqrs., the licence of the Chequers Inn was transferred from Mrs. Spurway to Elijah Young, and that of the Swan Inn from George Bowen to Wm. Head."[4]
