Children of Joachim Van Valkenburg and wife Elsie
There were two different men (cousins) [uncle b 1692 and nephew b 1695 (?)] named Jochem/Joachim/Jochum Van Valkenburg, both with a wife name Elsie/Elsje, living in the Albany-Kinderhook, New York, area in the early decades of the 1700s and having children baptized. It is difficult to distinguish between the two couples and their children. This page is intended to document the records and other information for them in order to help us sort the two families.
The two couples are:
- Jochum Jochemsz van Valckenburg (baptized 1692), son of Jochem and Elsje Van Husen (1698-1794), married 1719. First names of their 4 parents are Jochum, Eva, Jacob, and Judith.
- Jochum Lambertsz Valkenborch/van Valkenburg (baptized 1695), son of Lambert, and Elsie Klauw/Clauw (born abt.1697), married 1717. First names of his 2 parents are Lambert and Jannetje. Her parents are speculative, thought to be Hendrick and Cornelia.[1]
Identification of which of the two men married which Elsie is not straightforward, but two pieces of evidence support these assignments. First, the man who married Elsie Klauw in 1717 was identified as "Jochum Van Valkenburgh, Junr.," which in those years normally would mean the younger of two men named Jochum, not the son of a man named Jochum. Second, the father of Jochum Jochemsz van Valckenburg transferred land to his son Jochum shortly before the 1719 marriage of Jochum Van Valkenburg and Elsje Van Husen.
Combined List of Children
The initial list here was copied from Patricia Wardell's Early Bergen County Families. It was not -- and was not intended to be -- a complete list.
Children of Joachim and Elsie:
- Cornelia Van Valkenburgh, bp. 23 June 1718(?) Kinderhook Ref Ch. Parents Jochum Van Valkenburgh Jun., Elsie Van Valkenburgh. (wit: Leendert Conyn, Elsie Valkenburgh) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). Apparent date of birth -- before marriage of Jochem Jochemsz -- and first name of Cornelia link her to Jochum Lambertse and Elsie Klauw. Also note that father is "Junior."
- Eva Van Valkenburg, bp. 25 Oct 1719 Albany Ref Ch (wit: Joannes Mingaal, Jannetie Valkenburgh) (no mother’s surname in bp. record); apparently d.y. With first name of Eva, she must be the child of Jochem Jochemsz and Elsie Van Husen.
- Jannetie Van Valkenburg, bp. 3 July 1720 Albany Ref Ch (wit: Lamberd Redly [Radcliffe?], Eva Beekman) (no mother’s surname in bp. record) First name of Jannetje links her to Jochum Lambertse and Elsie Klauw.
- Jacob Vallenkenburgh, bp. 10 Jan 1721 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Pieter Van Alstyn & Grietie Van Alstyn) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). Baptism date close to baptism of Jannetje and first name of Jacob link him to Jochem Jochemsz and Elsie Van Husen.
- Eva Valkenburg, bp. 28 April 1723 Albany Ref Ch (wit: Joch. V. Aalsteyn, Marg. Redly) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). Since she was baptized just a few weeks before Henderick, she must be the child of Jochem Jochemsz and Elsie Van Husen. Apparently the first Eva had died.
- Henderick Van Valkenburgh, bp. 16 June 1723 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Pieter V: Valkenburgh, Marya Klauw) (parents in bp. record: Joghem Lam: Van Valkenburgh & Elsie V Valkenb:). Father is identified as Joghem Lam; mother must be Elsie Klauw. Settled in Kinderhook.
- Joachim v. Valkenburgh (twin), bp. 27 April 1725 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Theunis v. Slyck, Junr., Jannetie v Valkenburg) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). Joachim and Frans both settled (temporarily or permanently) at Hillsdale.
- Frans v. Valkenburgh (twin), bp. 27 April 1725 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Johannes Van Aelstyn, Eva Van Valkenburgh) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). Joachim and Frans both settled (temporarily or permanently) at Hillsdale.
- 1726. Aug. 7. Jannetie, of J. and Elsie V. Valkenburgh. Wit.: Jacob and Grietie Rettelief. Albany RDC[2] If the first Jannetie died, this would logically be a replacement for her. That connects her to Jochum Lambertse and Elsie Klauw.
- Judick V. Valkenburgh, bp. 26 Oct 1729 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Yzaak Vosburgh, Eva V. Aalsteyn) (no mother’s surname in bp. record). First name of Judick (Judith) links her to Jochem Jochemsz and Elsie Van Husen.
- Petrus V. Valkenburgh, bp. 11 July 1731 Kinderhook Ref Ch (wit: Gerrit Clauw, Catharina Wederwax) (no mother’s surname in bp. record)
- Grietje, born 18 March 1733, baptized 22 May 1733 in Zion Lutheran Church, Loonenburgh, 1733, Mar 18 Gretje VanValkenbrg, Jochem & Elyse. [3]
- Elsje, born 23 April 1735, baptized 10 Oct 1735 in Zion Lutheran Church, Loonenburgh 1735, Apr 23, Elsje Valkenburg, Johem & Elsje,[4]
- Engeltje(?), baptized 28 Feb 1736 at Kinderhook. (See below.)
- Jurge(?) aka George or Uriah, born 25 December 1741, baptized on 25 Feb 1742 in Zion Lutheran Church, Loonenburgh, 1741, Dec 25, Jurge Valkenburg, Jochem & Elsje.[5]
- National Association of the Van Valkenburg Family (NAVVF) shows Engeltje, baptized at Kinderhook on 28 Feb 1736, as a child of Jochum Van Valkenburg and Elsie.[1] Her baptism record shows her parents as J. Valkenburg and El. Valkenburg (as transcribed by Vosburgh) and J. Valkenburg and Eliz. Valkenburg (Holland Society of New York transcription on Ancestry.com), with witnesses Joha Valkenburg and Cat. Goewey.[6][7] This child Engeltje may be a daughter of John/Johannes Valkenburg and Elizabeth Halenbeck, who had married at Kinderhook on 21 July 1733.[8] But Engeltje's children (per NAVVF at https://navvf.org/VVgene/pafg21.htm#7188) were named Jochem, Hieronymus, Elssie or Elsie, and Abraham Turk. The names Jochem and Elsie suggest that those were her parents' names.
Baptism witnesses:
- 1734. 3 Maart. Gerrit Klauw, Elzie Klauw. Hendrik. Witnesses: Jochgum V. Valkenburgh, Elzie V. Valkenburgh. At Kinderhook.[9]

A couple of semi-interesting observations after a quick review of these records:
