Abstract

This page is looking at the WikiTree main connected component (the "Single Tree") from the focus point of Jeanne Suzanne Gardahaut (1900-1992).

Suzanne was born in Nantes, France, in 1900. She migrated in 1919 from Paris, France, to Seattle, Washington, USA, where she married twice and had posterity. Not only her life was a bridge over the ocean, but in her first circles are found other bridges connecting a variety of places and people.

This work stands at the intersection of two projects : 100 Circles and La Belle Époque.

See also the G2G post for discussion.

The circles of Suzanne

As for all the profiles in focus in the 100 Circles project, we monitor the distribution of circles, or "degrees from Suzanne". An extensive list of profiles in the first circles is available through the "My Connections" application, see https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:MyConnections&w=Gardahaut-1 for real-time results. In the current state of affairs (Jan. 2022) this application yields all the profiles up to the 5th circle, and the most part of the 6th circle, within which the threshold of 1,000 profiles is reached.

The following image is showing the population distribution of Suzanne's circles, as retrieved on November 23, 2021. The total distribution at that date extends to 93 circles, the "long tail" has been cut in this graph because population of circles over 60 is too small to show at this scale. At this date the most populated circle is the 19th, with a population over 2 million. The mean distance to Suzanne in the Single Tree is 22.7.

On Jan 12, 2022, after less than two months of work an a few reconnections, the mean distance has fallen to 22.2, and the peak circle is now the 18th.

Distribution of Suzanne Gardahaut circles (23 Nov 2021)

Such a distribution is quite typical of an "average" WikiTree profile, although the slight "bump" in the downslope, around circle 25, is a bit atypical when compared with other reference profiles. This slight anomaly is not explained at this stage.

Bridges in the first circles

Beyond the places where Suzanne herself lived (France and Washington State, USA), various parts of the world are reached in the very first circles of Suzanne.

France

Suzanne's ancestors came, on her mother's side, from the very heart of Brittany, an area called Poher or Kreizh Breizh, very endogamic until the end of the 19th century. Her father's line comes from the region of Nantes. Her two brothers married in Paris, connecting with various regions of France.

A five steps path leads from her brother Léon to a family of piano builders in Paris, through a family of Italian workers in Algeria.

Through one of her sister-in-law, a path towards French aristocrats goes through Aimery de Moré de Pontgibaud (1917-1944), in the 8th circle. (See connection path).

Europe

USA

The following states are found in birth and death places :

  • Circle 1 : Michigan, Arkansas, Washington.
  • Circle 2 : Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, South Dakota.

...

Canada

Nova Scotia is reached in Circle 3 with Elizabeth Spriggs (1889-1963), mother-in-law of Suzanne's son.

Australia (through Wales, England and Ireland)

Emma Sophia (Courquin) Brownlow (1821-1893), daughter of the above quoted Jean Charles Marie François Courquin (abt.1784-1849), married an English lace maker, William Brownlow (1821-1885). One of their daughters, Mary Brownlow (1843-1909), married an Irishman, James John Brennan (1836-1902), and they emigrated to Australia. Their great-grandson Alec Brennan AM is a WikiTreer.

Alec is in the 10th circle of Suzanne.

Profile history

The profile of Suzanne Gardahaut was created on Nov 3, 2011 by her great-grandson Andrew Simpson, through a GEDCOM import. Many profiles in her branch were imported at the same time, and many of them still are rough from import, needing cleaning and sourcing. See e.g., Jean Marie Gardahaut (abt.1737-1819), 5th paternal ancestor of Suzanne, not edited since 2012. Similar ones are found in the American branches.

In Sep. 2020, the profile was improved, as well as a certain number of close family profiles, by Bernard Vatant, 7th cousin once removed of Suzanne, with a precious help of Amanda Dunker for the family of Suzanne's husband(s) on the other side of the pond.

In Nov. 2021, Andrew Simpson resumed editing by adding and commenting family photographs.
