The goal of this project is to ...

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Abigail Lowe.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Clearing up the confusion and potentially correcting the profile for William Brooks (abt.1622-1688) who I believe was born ~1610 in England and not in Massachusetts in 1622
  • Establishing if who his parents are, potentially Richard Brookes & ANN HINDE
  • Creating and citing the profile on his daughter Patience Brooks who was the illegitimate child of his wife and her brother-in-law Samuel Wright Jr.

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

"WILLIAM BROOKS #76 was born in England in 1610 and died at Deerfield, Massachusetts on 30 December 1680 . On 18 October 1654 he married MARY BURT #37, who was baptized at Harberton, England on 13 April 1635 and died at Deerfield on 30 August 1689 . See #33 for her descent from Henry Burt. William Brooks went from London, England to Virginia in 1635 and appeared in Springfield, Massachusetts by 1653 and was at Deerfield, Massachusetts by 1686. On the first list, dated 23 December 1659, giving the seating arrangement at the church in Springfield he was assigned the 7th row. On the next list, dated 23 February 1662-3, after a gallery had been added to the church he was still assigned to the 7th row.

At a Springfield town meeting on 1 January 1671 William Brooks was granted land and received several other grants of land later. On 2 July 1664 he sold land at Springfield to William Hunter and sold other land in February 1666 to others retaining only 40 acres. These 40 acres he gave his son-in-law Jonathan Taylor. The above sales and transfers were registed in the records on 2 December 1686 . He was one of the signers of the petition dated 2 December 1668 wherein the inhabitants of Springfield protested certain impost duties. William and Mary Brooks had a daughter ABIGAIL #77, who was born at Springfield on 25 January 1665 - 6 , died there on 13 March 1754 and on 10 December 1685 married SAMUEL STEBBINS # 58 .

(1) EXCERPTS FROM BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM BROOKS COMPILED BY CHRISTOPHER BROOKS: [10] William Brooks was born in England, perhaps as early as 1610, perhaps as late as 1627/28, to unknown parents. (Current DNA testing of male descendants has established that William had not shared a common male ancestor with other New England Brooks lines for at least a millennium.) William Brooks first appears in New England on 6 Feb 1648/49 at Springfield, Massachusetts, when he took the oath of fidelity (meaning that he was then at least 21 years of age). There he married, 18 Oct 1654, Mary Burt, daughter of Henry Burt and Ulalia Marche, with whom he had 16 children. She was at the time recently delivered of an illegitimate child by Sgt. Samuel Wright Jr. (who would be raised as Remembrance Brooks). In the account books of William and John Pyncheon, father-and-son patroons of the Connecticut River Valley, are numerous notations of business dealings with William Brooks. Styled a tailor, William obtained the raw materials of his trade (cloth goods) from the Pyncheons. On 16 Sep 1670, Reice Bedortha complained against William Brookes and Mary his wife for "theire abusing of his son Joseph Bedortha by Bad language flinging a stick at him and using Reproachfull words Threatning expreshons and Taunting speeches." William Brooke and Mary his wife appeared, and though they partly denied the charges, magistrate Pynchon found them "both guilty of a very great Misdemeanor Touching that Busyness." He fined William 20s. and witness fees, Mary 10s.9 In 1675, Rev. Samuel Mather was preaching at Deerfield, Massachusetts and boarding with William Brooks, who must have been in residence there that year. Then King Philip's War erupted, and after Lothrop's defeat at Bloody Brook, on the 18th of September, Deerfield's garrison and inhabitants abandoned the place. William's sons John and William were killed in an Indian ambush at Westfield on the 27th of October. Their father was among those who took the oath of allegiance at Springfield, 31 Dec-1 Jan 1678/9. William Brooks and son Ebenezer were each granted 50 acres "beyond, or at ye upper end of Hight streete," at nearby Suffield, Connecticut, in 1680. These grants seem to have been made in consideration of the loss of two sons at the onset of war. On 8 Aug 1680, William Brooks was bound for his daughter Patience's unwed pregnancy at Springfield. He was one of 34 qualified voters at Suffield's first town meeting, 9 Mar 1681/82. He removed by 1686 to Deerfield, where he died 30 Dec 1688.There his widow Mary died 31 Aug following. (2) EXCERPTS FROM INTERESTING BIOGRAPHY OF MARY BURT BY CHRISTOPHER BROOKS: Mary Burt, 2d so-named, was baptized 13 Apr 1635 at Harberton, Devonshire, and emigrated with her parents to New England. After a brief stay at Roxbury, they settled at Springfield in 1640. In a precursor of things to come within the family, Mary's sister Abigail was ordered, 11 Jan 1640/41, well whipped by Springfield's constable for giving promises of marriage to John Hobell (Hubbell), despite her father's prohibition, and Hobell was whipped for offering and attempting fornication with Abigail. Mary Burt married, 18 Oct 1654 at Springfield, Massachusetts, WilliamBrooks. At the time of her marriage she was recently (Jan-Feb?) delivered of an illegitimate child by another man; 10 months after the marriage she presented William with a son of his own, the first of their 16 children. Charged by Mary as the father of her first child, Sgt. Samuel Wright Jr. requested a jury trial, held 24 Mar 1654. The verdict of the Jury:"Wee fynd Samuel Wright Junior guilty of committinge wickedness with Mary Burt in having the use of her body severall tymes, whereby wee fynd him to be the father of the said child:Whereuppon the said Samuell Wright was ordered and adjudged to be the reputed father of the said child: And for his evill behaviour therein to be whipped with 12. stripes on the naked body well layd on: And to pay the charges of the Court, and towards the mayntenance of the said child to pay after the rate of One shillinge four pence per week makeing payment every month, dureinge the tearme of Seaven yeares, and at the end of Seaven yeares to pay Forty shillings towards the putting of the child forth to be an apprentice and in the meane while to give good Security vizt a bond for 4£ with Sufficient Suretyes to perform this Order." "And Mary Burt for her great wickedness was ordered and adjudged to be whipped on the naked body with 12 lashes well laid on as also to keep her said child: And whereas shee hath been found guilty of Comitting wickedness with Joseph Bonde Shee was adjudged to be well whipped a Second tyme with 10 lashes about a month after the first whippinge, according as shee shal be called forth, except shee doe before pay into the Constable as a fyne to redeeme her Second whippinge the Sum of Thirty shillings." "Samuell Wright Junior was punished the 28th of May 1654 and Mary Burt by reason of inability to come forth and for other causes was protracted till [blank] of May following [between 29-31 May 1654] at which tyme shee received her punishment and to redeeme the second whippinge shee paid the fyne of 30s above mentioned." The records do not state whether the child had been born at the time of the trial, but the chronology of events across multiple households makes this almost certain (cf. footnote 6). The trials of Abigail and Mary Burt constitute two of only three fornication trials on record during the Pynchon magistracy at Springfield.2 On 16 Sep 1670, Reice Bedortha complained against "William Brookes and Mary his wife for theire abusing of his son Joseph Bedortha by Bad language flinging a stick at him and using Reproachfull words Threatning expreshons and Taunting speeches." William Brooke and Mary his wife appeared, and though they partly denied the charges, magistrate Pynchon found them "both guilty of a very great Misdemeanor Touching that Busyness." He fined William 20s. and witness fees, Mary 10s. In 1686 they removed to Deerfield, where William died on 30 Dec 1688 and she on 31 [town rec; Burt, Warren & Eno] Aug following, at age 54.8 The will of her mother, 27 May 1684, left Mary "an heifer." [S1594] Springfield VR, 20, william Brook/mary Burt m. Old Style/New Style dating complicates the sequencing of events in this case. Joseph H. Smith, editor of the published Pynchon Court Record, dated the trial of Samuel Wright and Mary Burt 24 Mar 1654/5, and Samuel's subsequent whipping in 1655. This is consistent with the fact that the new year, under the Julian (Old Style) calendar of the day, began on the 25th of March. The court record, however, unambiguously gives a date of 24 Mar 1654. And dating the trial in 1655 places the date of Mary Burt's subsequent whipping within the term of her second pregnancy. A trial date of 24 Mar 1654, on the other hand, yields the following order of dates (both known and estimated) in Gregorian (modern) expression. Say Apr 1653—Samuel Wright impregnates Mary Burt. 24 Nov 1653—Samuel Wright marries Elizabeth Burt. Say Jan 1654—Remembrance is born. 24 Mar 1654—Fornication trial of Samuel Wright and Mary Burt. 28 May 1654—Samuel Wright punished. Say 30 May 1654—Mary Burt punished. 3 Oct 1654—Samuel Wright III (s. Samuel/Elizabeth) is born. Oct 1654—Mary not pregnant (marries this month, again pregnant within weeks). 18 Oct 1654—Mary Burt marries William Brooks. 18 Aug 1655—William/2s Brooks (s. William/Mary) is born.
