Clephane vs. MacLean Clephane
Background
William Douglas Clephane married Marianne MacLean on 4 September 1790.[1][2] Shortly afterwards, in November 1790, by Royal Licence, William was authorised to 'take and use' the surname MacLean in addition to Clephane.[3] Thereafter, usage and spelling by William and Marianne and their three children who survived into adulthood varied - but most records, which they themselves would have had direct influence over, refer to themselves as MacLean Clephane.
William was born in 1759 and had a well-established military career when the Royal License was received. He had been known as William Douglas Clephane for 31 years to his parish and his employers.
