He had a brother Bernard S Clough, born 18 February 1820 in Michigan, and died of malnutrition due to prematurity at 3 months in 30 May 1920 in Lakeview, Montcalm, Michigan. He was buried in Altona Cemetery, Altona, Mecosta, Michigan.

The memorial states that he was the "third white child born in Albion (includes Albion Township)".

He married twice:

  1. Laura Alzina Thompson (1836–1901). Born June 1836 in Oswego county, New York. Married in January 1856 in Michigan. She died in 1902.
  2. Ada Vance. She was 40, living in Siuth Haven as a dressmaker, when she married Romondo (age 66, farmer in Marengo) [transcribed as "Romonds"] on 13 November 1902 in South Haven, Calhoun, Michigan.[13]

Rogers (30, day laborer, born April 1870), who had been married 3 years, and a niece Zora Belcher (16, born February 1884) [probably related to his deceased daughter Minerva (Lake) Belcher]. They were all born in Michigan, except for Alzina from New York.Alzina had 7 children, with 6 still living [their daughter Minerva (Lake) Belcher had died in 1893]; Allie had no children.[17]

He married 'Flora Perry (1805–1884) about 1823 in Jefferson county, New York.

James was a pioneer of Albion Township, and built the cobblestone house on south side of B Drive South on the road to Concord.[20]

They had six sons (all with unusual names):

Montholon Lake

Montholon Lake was born about 8 November 1838 (based on death age). His parents were James Lake & Flora Perry.

He died at age 7 years, 10 months, 9 days on 17 September 1846, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery (Old Grounds Block 2, Lot 102, Grave 1), Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan.[25]

Dessoles Lake

Dessoles Lake was born in 1826 in New York. His parents were James Lake & Flora Perry.

He married Malinda Coleman, when she was 20; they had eight children, with only four still living at her death:

  • Vallonia Lake b. circa 1848
  • James B. Lake b. 1856
  • Alta Lake b. circa 1859
  • Florry Lake b. circa 1868

Dessoles died at age 62 on 10 October 1888 in Ovid, Branch, Michigan, and his burial details are unknown. (Three photos included).[26]

Leman L. Lake

Leman L Lake was born in 1856. His parents were Romondo Lake and Laura Thompson. He was the brother of Isabelle (Lake) Clough, daughter of Isaac Clough (son of Zera Clough, grandfather of Burnell Clough)

They had these eleven children (all with unusual names):

  1. Erie Lake (1894–1983). He opened the Erie Lake General Store in Marengo, Calhoun, Michigan (just west of Albion) in 1922 that carried grocers and much more, which became a community center with square-shaped scoops on ice cream cones and an upstairs ballroom. He was also their postmaster until the post office was eliminated in 1933 during the Great Depression. Also he was a supervisor of Marengo Township. He married Margaret Wilson, who died in 1958. Later he married widow Lena (Lincoln) King in 1967. He moved to Florida to retire and died in 1983.[27]

Malinda Coleman

Malinda Coleman (also spelled Colman) was born 1827 in New York. She was the daughter of Zur H. Coleman and Sally Nearpass.

Malinda Coleman married Dessoles Lake when she was 20; they had eight children, with only four still living at her death:

  • Vallonia Lake (abt.1848–?)
  • James B. Lake (1856–1942).
  • Alta C (Lake) Miller (1860–1907). She married William R. Miller (1864–1934)
  • Florry Lake (abt.1868–?)

She was the widow of Dessoles Lake (who had died earlier in 1888) when she died at age 73 on 19 April 1900 in West Kinderhook, Branch, Michigan. She was buried on 21 April 1900 in Lockwood Cemetery, Coldwater, Branch, Michigan.

Malinda Coleman's death certificate gives her age as 73 years, 8 months and 13 days. Her parents were Zurr Colman & Sally Nearpass.[28]

James B. Lake family

James B. Lake

James B. Lake was born on 22 December 1856 in Branch county, Michigan. He was the son of Dessole Lake and Malinda Colman.

He married Cecilia Leffingwell, who died in 1905.

Then he married Edith Mary Bishop.

He died at age 85 on 5 November 1942 at a hospital in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan.


Edith Mary (Bishop) Lake

Edith Mary Bishop was born on 4 September 1865 in Essex, England. She was the daughter of George Lobsey Bishop and Amelia (Cooper) Fellow Bishop.

She initially immigrated from London, England to New York, New York oer mon 11 April 1877 with her mother Amelia (Cooper) Bishop and brothers George Williamson, Lewis John.

About 1880, her mother Amelia Bishop was divorced from George L Bishop in either USA or England. In the 1880 US Census, George Bishop was divorced and living in Wayne, Edwards, Kansas, United States.

Edith Bishop must have returned to England with her mother Amelia. Apparently, her brothers George and Lewis remained in America, because they were not in the 1881 England Census when Amelia was living in St John parish, Hackney, London with George Fellows and children Edith M, Harry G, and Albert F (All last name Bishop).

Her mother Amelia married George Fellows sometime between 1881–1891. In the 1891 and 1901 England Census, Edith was still living with her mother Amelia in Hackney, London, England, now spouse George Fellows, and children Edith M Bishop, Harry G (Bishop) Fellows, and Albert F (Bishop) Fellows.

Edith came back to America at age 42 in 1907.

Edith Lake died (after a fall at home) at age 92 on 11 December 1957 (after James) at Sheldon Memorial Hospital [closed 1967] in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery (Block 117, Lot 61, Grave 4), Albion, Calhoun, Michigan. She was survived by a niece, Mrs John Hartman of Jackson, and three nephews, Ronald Bishop of Albion, Fred Bishop of Jackson, and Max Bishop of Rives Junction.[29]

George Williamson Bishop

George Williamson Bishop was born in July 1859 in England. He was the son of George Lobsey Bishop and Amelia (Cooper) Bishop, and brother of Edith Mary Bishop and John Lewis Bishop.

George Bishop died at age 70 on 2 October 1929 in Parma, Jackson, Michigan, United States, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery (Block 116, Lot 35, Grave 6), Albion, Calhoun, Michigan.[30]

Zur's father was Job Coleman, who was born 1741 in Essex county, Massachusetts. He was the son of James Coleman & Rachel (Andrews) Coleman. He was baptized on 11 October 1741 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Job Coleman married Elizabeth Martin on 9 November 1765 at Lunenberg, Massachusetts.

"Job Coleman bought a tract of land of 50 pounds from Daniel Belden in 1773, which was likely the now so-called "Coleman Lot." He remained in town until 1796, when he went to Heath, Mass., where he owned a tavern. The following year he sold his Shelburne property to Josiah Dole, son of Parker."

The Colman family moved to Heath about 1796. In 1805 the family was stricken by typhus, along with several neighbors, and the parents and three children died. First Rhoda, aged 26, died on July 8. She was followed by Zenus, aged 19, on August 2; Joseph, aged 21, on August 5; then the parents, Job on September 2 and Elizabeth (aged 61) on October 25.

Job Coleman died at age 64 on 2 September 1805 in Heath, Franklin, Massachusetts. He was buried in Hill Cemetery, Shelburne, Franklin, Massachusettts.

He married Hepzibah (Davis) Colman (1752–1830).

They had three children:

  • Isaac Coleman (1779–1856)
  • Lydia (Coleman) Haven (1785–1858)
  • Andrus Coleman (1793–1873)

Solomon died at age 84 on 2 January 1837. He was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, Windsor, Vermont.[42]

Hepzibah (Davis) Colman

Hepzibah Davis was born on 15 July 1752 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts; she was the daughter of Zacariah and Lydia Davis.

Hepzibah died at age 77 on 15 May 1830, and was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, Windsor, Vermont.

Isaac Coleman's family

Lucy Mant (Church) Coleman

Lucy Mant Church was born on 29 August 1769 in Templeton, Worcester, Massachusetts.

She was a widow twice.

Lucy Mant Church married Isaac Colman on 16 March 1806 in Chester, Windsor, Vermont.

Isaac & Lucy had one child:
