About the Project

The Cobcroft Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Cobcroft name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Cobcroft name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Cobcrofts), by time period (18th Century Cobcrofts), or by topic (Cobcroft DNA, Cobcroft Occupations, Cobcroft Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Goals

The Australian Cobcroft family appear to all be descended from a single couple: second fleet convict John Cobcroft and Sarah Smith. John Cobcroft was probably descended from John Cobcroft of Covent Garden, London. It is possible that he had children from a previous relationship in London before being transported.

There were additional families living in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Task List

  • Adding UK Cobcrofts and Cobcrafts listed in FindMyPast records. Include one name study category for easy identification.
  • Linking unconnected family members where possible.
  • Adding deceased Australian Cobcrofts to the tree.
  • Adding details for existing Cobcroft profiles.
  • Identifying descendants of UK Cobcrofts.

DNA

Two Australian descendants of John Cobcroft have tested yDNA at FamilyTree DNA: haplogroup G-M201.

Many Australia Cobcroft descendants have taken autosomal DNA tests. It may be possible to support relationships to UK Cobcroft descendants with DNA, though the distance is likely to be greater than 4th cousins.

  • The Cobcroft family in Australia 1790-1978 / compiled by Brian W. Cobcroft. - Use with caution - some earlier assumptions have been disproven, especially the line of Cobcrofts in the UK. Does not include female lines except where the Cobcroft name was continued.
