Biography
- Elder John Whipple of Ipswich is the immigrant ancestor of this branch of the family.[1][2] He must not be confused with John Whipple who arrived in Dorchester by 1632 and who removed to Providence, Rhode Island in 1658.[3] He was baptized on 29 August 1596 in Bocking, Essex, England, the son of Matthew and Joan Whipple of Bocking. Like his father, he was a clothier. With his older brother, John Whipple immigrated to New England in 1638 and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was very commonly called Elder John Whipple in records to distinguish him from his son Capt. John Whipple and his nephew Lieut. John Whipple.
- The earliest record of John Whipple in New England is the grant of "6 acres of planting ground next his brother" on 1 September 1638 in Ipswich.[4] At the same time, he and his brother were jointly granted an additional two hundred acres. He and his brother were active in community affairs. His first town assignment was the keeping of a herd of 86 cows for which he was paid £15.[5] On a 13 May 1640, he was made a freeman of the town of Ipswich.[6] He and his brother were on a committee "for the furthering of trade amongst us" on 11 January 1640/1.[7] Soon thereafter, on 10 February 1640/1, he was made a selectman of Ipswich.[8] He is frequently found on committees to apportion land, settle disputes, build fences, and to serve on juries. by 1642 he was a deacon of the church in Ipswich.[9] He served a total of eight terms as a deputy to the general court for Ipswich in 1640, 1641, 1642, 1646, 1650, 1651, 1652, and 1653.
- He was married first to Susan Clarke, the daughter Stephen and Elizabeth Clarke of Theydon Garnon.[10] They had eleven children with the first ten born in Bocking England and the last in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Of his five sons, only Capt. John Whipple survived childhood to marry and leave descendants. Three of his daughters married and had children. Following the death of Susan in 1661, he married Janet ( ), the widow of Thomas Dickinson of Rawley.
- Elder John Whipple died 30 June 1669 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He left a will naming his surviving son and three surviving daughters. Also named was his son-in-law Anthony Potter who had married his deceased daughter Elizabeth. The bequest to his "beloved wife Jennet" mentions a marriage agreement signed before their marriage; three of her daughters by her previous marriage were also mentioned in the will.

Common Errors to Avoid
- Disambiguation: He is commonly confused with John Whipple of Dorchester and Providence. For example, Pope in his Pioneers of Massachusetts hopelessly intermingled records for John Whipple of Ipswich with those of John Whipple of Dorchester and Providence.[19][20]
- LNAB of 2nd wife: She is often said to be Janet Brooke as there is a record of a Janet Brooke marrying a Thomas Dickinson on 15 April 1640 at Leeds, St Peter, Yorkshire, England. However, it has been shown that this cannot be the same Thomas Dickinson. See the profile of Thomas Dickinson for more details.
