Coed-y-Foel is a farm, variously described as being in Llandderfel, and Llanfor, hamlets to the North of Bala in Merionethshire. In the 1600s it was owned by the Ffoulkes family and was run "as a Quaker farmstead"[1]. In 1682 the then owners, Edward Ffoulkes (1651-abt.1741) and Eleanor (Hughes) Ffoulkes (1650-1733), were amongst a group of local non-conformists who emigrated to Pennsylvania, where they founded a Quaker settlement. In earlier years the farm was owned by Cadwaladr ap Maredydd (1556-)
Research Note
Needless to say, the spelling of the Ffoulkes family has been spelt in many ways over the years. The derivation comes the Welsh forename Ffulk. The The family of Ffulk became Ffulkes, in the same way that the family of Huw would have become Hughes. The double ff in Welsh softens the consonant to be like Fan, whereas one F would be pronounced like Van. The lack of understanding of this meant the double f was dropped, also the penultimate e, which generally persisted with Hughes.
