About the Project

The Coleman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Coleman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Coleman name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Coleman's), by time period (18th Century Coleman's), or by topic (Coleman DNA, Coleman Occupations, Coleman Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origin

The exact origin of the Coleman surname is unknown. It has supposed origins in multiple regions including Ireland, England, Germany.

It has multiple spelling variations including Colman, Kolman, etc. and likely has multiple lines of descent with a common surname from different lines.

The Irish derivation is often associated with St. Columban where as the English one is often associated with King Cole.

It is also thought that some lines may have been named due to the occupational association with coal.

There are numerous different locations around the world populated with descendants of various lines of Coleman
