History

Coleraine Cemetery is located on the south side of Major Mackenzie Drive West, east of Highway 50, in City of Vaughan. It once served as a burying ground for the Coleraine Wesleyan Methodist Church in the hamlet of Coleraine. As Coleraine straddled two townships, Toronto Gore and Vaughan, it would have included burials of residents from both townships.[1]

Burials at this site may have begun as early as 1830.[2] However, the associated church was not built until at least 1861 when a 1/8 acre parcel of land on the north side of Major Mackenzie Drive West (roughly across from the cemetery) was purchased from Joseph Wilson for this purpose.[3] The church property contained a 26' x 36' painted wood framed church, a drive shed, and a wood shed, enclosed by a fence.[4] The church was closed in 1901 and the building no longer exists.[1]

It appears that the cemetery was not maintained for many years, as no original gravestones or markers remain. A memorial stone was erected by Town of Vaughan in 1981 and it reads:

Site of the former Coleraine Burying Grounds, associated with the Coleraine Wesleyan Methodist Church, located on the North side of Coleraine Road. This memorial is erected in memory of the known and unknown persons interred and in recognition of the first known trustees of the burying grounds: James Devins, George Kellam, William Kersey, Jacob Pimm, Alexander Rofs. Restored 1981 by The Town of Vaughan.

Today, Coleraine Cemetery is owned and maintained by City of Vaughan. It is unknown if any burial records exist for this cemetery. The York Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society does not have a cemetery transcript available for this cemetery.
