Collins Plantation
John Collins was born Jan. 6, 1800, in Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of James Collins and Lucy Burton. He married Frances B. Cave on Dec. 17, 1823, in Orange County, Virginia.[1] They had four children: Izetta Collins Barton (1826-1849), Emily Jane Collins Stewart (1828-1893), Frances Collins Barton (1832-1883), and John B. Collins (born 1834). He moved his family to a farm or plantation in Howard County, Missouri, probably in the 1830s.
In 1840, John Collins was enumerated in Chariton Township, Howard County, Missouri. His household included seven free white persons and 24 enslaved persons, including Spottswood Rice.[2][3]
John Collins died intestate before 6 Oct 1841 in Howard County, Missouri.[4] After his death his property was sold in 1844.[5]

For Sale
Collins owned a number of enslaved persons. On 5 Dec 1842 the court ordered as many of the enslaved as needed to be sold to pay the debts of John Collins.[8]
The enslaved sold for cash in hand, January 1843:[9]

- Garnett was sold to Carroll & Co for $500
- Presley was sold to Jas A. Blackwell for $500
