Company F of the 38th Virginia Infantry was also known as the Davis Rifle Guard. Jeduthan Washington Carter, Jr. was in charge of recruiting men, with his base in Republican Grove, Halifax County. The unit officially entered the CSA on June 4, 1861, with Captain Jeduthan W. Carter the first commander.
