Combined Payrolls for Nelson County, Virginia

Transcription and Abstract notes: Name abbreviations have generally been spelled out, such as Samuel where the writing says Sam'l.

All payrolls below have been abstracted from tables. Names have been copied, but not payment roll numbers. See payroll image or owner profile for details not fully transcribed here.

In most of these payrolls below, the owners did not sign for themselves, but assigned an attorney to represent them; the attorneys signed on behalf of their clients and accepted payments for the hire of the enslaved laborers. Some payrolls have individual documents attached which authorize the attorneys and some do not. These sometimes yield extra information about the owner or enslaved laborer. Attorneys signing payrolls have been noted below.

All payrolls below acknowledge that J. B. Stanard, 1st Lieutenant and later Captain, Corps of Engineers, paid certain Nelson County, Virginia, slave owners for work performed by their slaves. The specific location and duration for each payroll is noted below.

Payroll 71

This payroll acknowledges work performed on "Brook Defenses" at an unstated location in Virginia, from September 1862 to January 1863.

The only owner signing for him/herself on this payroll is M.T.C. Loving; all others had an attorney sign on their behalf. Attorneys signing this document include: Alexander Brown, L.L. Loving, J.C. Stanfield, David Abney Witt, and H.G. Staples.

Payroll 123

This payroll acknowledges work performed on "Brook Defenses" at an unstated location in Virginia, from November 1862 to January 1863.

The only owners signing for themselves on this payroll are James Jackson Hughes and W.D. Ligon; all others had an attorney sign on their behalf. Attorneys signing this document include: Alexander Brown, J.O. Stanfield, and Gibson & Watkins.

The note assigning the attorney of Robert T. Hubard provides some background information regarding the situation of the enslaved laborers: "I hereby appoint Messrs Gibson & Watkins of Richmond my Attorneys and authorize them, in my name and behalf to receive payment for the hire of seven of my negro men, from the 7th of Nov 1862 to the 31st of Dec 1862, who were impressed to work upon the fortifications near Richmond, and who leaving my plantation in the County of Nelson, accompanied the slaves of other planters to Richmond in the early part of Nov last -- in other words on the 7th of that month. The agent of the government told the slaveholders of Nelson and Buckingham that they would receive $16 per month for the hire of each slave. Witness my hand and seal this 24th January 1863, R. T. Hubard, Buckingham; Witnessed by E.W. Hubard, Jr. and W.B. Hubard."

Additionally, James Jackson Hughes provided a written statement to the chancery court of Nelson County, Virginia, in 1871 regarding his enslaved laborer, James/Jim, which provides some additional background about the conditions endured by the impressed workers. He wrote, "...in January 1863, the negro man Jim was taken by the confederate authorities and placed upon the fortifications around the City of Richmond where he was worked until March 1863, when becoming sick from exposure, he was returned to respondent in such a condition as to render him of but little value thereafter."

Also included is documentation for owner Thomas J. Massie of Lovingston, Nelson County, with enslaved laborer Warner, but Warner does not appear on this payroll. The months listed for Warner's work at the fortifications are December 1862 through February 1863, where Warner does appear, so this documentation was incorrectly included with this payroll, and should have been included with Payroll 452, below.
