Documenting a connection: from Italy and Sweden to the Global Tree as represented by an early Connecticut immigrant.

The context of creation

The profile of Gaetano Jaconelli (1890-1952) was created in August 2009 by someone who has since left WikiTree. The single source was Sveriges Dödbok 1947-2006, which had been scoured for people born in Italy who died in Sweden. The intention must have been to contribute to a truly global WikiTree, by adding profiles for migrating people.

A category, Italians in Sweden, was created for gathering Italian-born people appearing in Swedish sources; the sources being mostly databases available on CD. The category contains profiles for some pretty interesting people, like Stefanus Maria Gavuzzi (1763-1833), confectioner to the royal court - but also for Italian organ grinders of unknown origins, who spent a single season in Sweden. Gavuzzi is one of the very few profiles in the category who has a connection to the Global Tree. His profile also has a different creation history, being entered by somebody with a genuine interest in his line. The profiles entered from names and dates in databases turn out to be quite difficult to connect, because of their inter-nationality. However, many of them were provided with primary sources for the Swedish part of their lives in 2019; a few also got Italian sources through G2G collaboration.

The context of immigration

The italian immigrants who came to Sweden in the late 19th century and early 20th century mostly settled in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö. In Göteborg there was quite an Italian colony in Masthugget. They were members of the Roman Catholic Congregation in Göteborg. The most common family name for the Italians in Göteborg was probably Jaconelli, which seems to have been a a very common name in San Biagio Saracinisco, where most of them came from. Many of the Jaconellis were musicians. Some were toy makers and pedlars. One family started an ice cream factory in Stockholm. It is not (yet) clear how the families were related.

Gaetano Jaconelli was born 23 March 1890 in San Biagio Saracinisco, Lazio, Italy. He came to Göteborg, Sweden, with his parents in January 1903.

The connection

A lot of work was first put into sourcing as many of the single-source Italians-in-Sweden as possible, which also resulted in the formation of more family clusters among profiles created independently. Since they mostly married other Italians, and due to a lack of competence in sourcing them in Italy, they remained separate from the Global Tree. Then an attempt at connecting Gaetano and his family to the Global Tree was made in the summer of 2019. The strategy was to look at the ancestors of a Swede married into the Jaconelli family, and follow a single line backwards in time towards an area with a substantial number of interconnected families. In this case we ended up in Sundborn parish, Dalarna, where we hoped to find a connection to the connected families already there. It turned out to be more difficult than expected - not least because every other male in the parish in the 17th century was named Daniel, which is elsewhere among the more uncommon names. In patronymic society this meant an abundance of unrelated Danielssons and Danielsdotters. The connection attempt was left unfinished.

The connection was finally completed (more or less by accident) in the beginning of December 2020 when some time was spent researching the endpoint in Sundborn, in order to take a new line forward in time. Two duplicates were created accidentally before the realization struck that this was the connection we were looking for.

Looking at Gaetano's connection in the framework of the 100 Circles research we find that his mean distance to the profiles in the Global Tree 13 December 2020 was 43,52 "degrees" (i.e. between 43 and 44) and the longest distance 119.

However, his path to one of our favourite anchors, Samuel Lothrop Esq (1622-1700), was only 32 degrees. One could say that Gaetano and Lothrop both are on the same side of the big bulk of the Tree.
