Introduction

Connor civil parish in County Antrim covers an area of Mid-Antrim which includes Kells village and the southern part of the town of Ballymena. Connor parish has a total area of 69.6 km² or 26.9 square miles.
The River Maine forms the western boundary of part of the parish and the Kellswater river (a branch of the Maine) bisects the parish running roughly East to West. The main A26 road from Antrim to Ballymena runs through the parish. Other significant roads are the B53 which runs through the parish from Randalstown towards Larne, B98 East to West through Kells, and B59 from Doagh towards Ballymena.
Connor civil parish spans the historic baronies of Antrim Lower and Toome Upper. The irish name is Coinnire which is translated as "(wild-)dog oak-wood".[1]

Kells village and its neighbour Connor are divided by a small stream but are considered a single village which is often referred to as Kells and Connor. It had a population of 2,053 people (808 households) in the 2011 Census. A Christian settlement in Connor was established in 480 AD and a Monastery in Kells in 500 AD.[2]
