Introduction
The Corotoman Estate was the Virginia estate owned by the Carter family from 1653 until 1862. Christ Church was built upon it in the 1730s. For its first seventy-five years Corotoman’s fields, forests, waters, and buildings were worked by black slaves and white indentured servants. From 1735 until the end of the Civil War, Corotoman Estate was worked only by the enslaved, as the terms of the indentured had expired.
Acknowledgement
There is a great amount of research on the enslaved at Corotoman. The Corotoman Slave Histories [1] are an exceptional resource from which this profile has been created in part. The histories of the slaves of Corotoman were made available online in 2016 by Patrick Heffernan, Ph.D., a volunteer researcher at Historic Christ Church & Museum. Dr. Heffernan has now made available the Corotoman Servant Database. See the source below.
