Location: Scotland, later the world!!
Surname/tag: Coull
Mostly early Coulls were agricultural workers but from before about 1660 many became Mariners. These Coulls traveled the world and are found in at least 30 counties. They are still traveling, I have been to at least 25 countries.
Lots of records of mariners just list an initial, for example a G. Coull was master of a paddle steamer that served the Victorian Coast in Australia from about 1868 to 1880 but where did he come from? An number perished in various ship wrecks all over the world but mostly just identified by a single initial. The Scottish habit of naming first son after his Paternal Grand Father, Second after Maternal Grand Father and third after his Father is no real help!
Check coull.me for a one name study - any help would be greatly appreciated.
