What we do

Ireland Project - County Teams
A PDF file giving an introduction to inform you of the role of the county teams, to explain the structure of the teams and to let you know what is expected of you as a member. This PDF is hosted on the Google Drive of David Loring so if you have any problems accessing it please contact him. The PDF is downloadable from the viewer.
Whilst familiarizing ourselves with Styles and Standards and 'standard' Wikitree 'best practice' goals such as merging duplicate profiles, sourcing, cleaning and adding biographies, linking profiles to the wider family tree and general Profile Improvement, as a member of the Ulster Team you will be assisting in helping people locate their ancestors in counties of the Province of Ulster. There are various ways in which we can do this, some through the sub-projects of the Ulster counties and some by providing the framework whereby records are grouped together, categorized, under various aspects such as towns, townlands, parishes, electoral districts and census records etc.
Please remember Communication Before Editing.

Helping as a member

A part of being a member of the Ireland Project and of the Ulster Province Team is giving a little bit of your time if possible to tidying up the profiles we oversee as the team. Some of these profiles such as the Unknown Locations and Unsourced need a bit of TLC from the Team members. In particular those that have been orphaned for what ever reason and no longer have a profile manager to watch over them need our attention. Any little bit of time you can spare will be appreciated you may be assured. Resolving sources for unsourced profiles and determining locations of birth and / or death where such information does not currently exist will benefit the whole WikiTree community.
See the Profiles Needing Work link below in the status section for details of what is needing to be done.
For other Sub-Categories for Ulster see the main County category for each of the Ulster counties. Some examples of the sub-Categories are:
See Ireland Sub-Projects for other Irish projects you might be interested in.
It is highly recommended that you start a One Name Study or more for your surnames. It is a great place to store your research notes, sources such as web sites, books, etc. and a place to connect to other genealogists who are working on that name.

Ulster Province Status Pages

Go to the Parishes of Ulster (Status) page which displays the progress of parish CIB and Space pages and the current version number. This also just happens to be a useful list of every civil parish in Ulster Province.

Resources

A considerable amount has gone into and is still on going on the determination of the correct townland names and locations and the categorization of these. In order that we present a uniform format for location categories please visit this page for help with creating Geographic Categories for Ireland
Building upon a sound framework of locations we aim to provide as comprehensive as possible a list of resources on the each main County page. Please add any sources for Counties on the main page for the County.

My Grandfather's (Hamilton) family is from the townland of Gorteen, Co. Fermanagh - but not the one you have listed. There are many, many Gorteens or Gurteens across Ireland, meaning "little field," describing the land. Ours is to the west near Lough Melvin, if you'd like to add it: https://www.logainm.ie/en/60398

COUNTY Fear Manach/Fermanagh BARONY An Machaire Buí/Magheraboy CIVIL PARISH Daimhinis/Devenish TOWNLAND Gorteen

Of interest to people who have ancestors in this area - I've found records both in Enniskillen (county seat) and in Ballyshannon in Co. Donegal, as that was considered the area's legal regional center (for instance on census records).

I'm very interested to check out those Ballyshannon Estate records!

Hi, when you say not listed and add it, where? In the listing Townlands, County Fermanagh? I have added it to the townland categories and it also appears in the Parish page for Devenish. David
Hi David -

Yes in the listing townlands. Thank you! Now I will update my Hamilton family profiles for 19th century who were all from that townland - the only thing I was able to enter previously was Garrison, the closest town (and where many of my family married) but inaccurate.

I would like to be added to this project if possible. My 3rd ggg grandfather William F. Nelson was born in County Tyrone. He left the Port of Belfast in June of 1840 and went to New York-(Buffalo was initially wrote in then had a line through it-Buffalo was not an immigration intake station-they would have stopped in New York City). He was born between the years of 1808 and 1840 depending on the census or paperwork.I can place him in Mercer County Pennsylvania in the 1850 census with his wife and children. His oldest child-Lucinda was born in April of 1843. I do not know his parents names or if he siblings. I have yet to find his townland despite researching at PRONI and in Omagh. I do plan to travel back to County Tyrone next year for more research or exploring the townland.

He married a Gillespie-which is a pretty common name in County Tyrone. I think that there has to be some kind of connection between the Gillespies and Nelson's in County Tyrone as to why he settled in Pymatuning Twp,Mercer County,Pennsylvania. It's just a long process of elimination!

Hi! My ancestor Edward George McNabb was born in Drumquin area, 1868. His parents also claimed to be born and married there, although I couldn't find any marriage record in the Langfield parish book or neighbouring parishes . They're a brick wall. The parish book actually says "No marriages recorded for years 59 60 61 62", not sure if there were actually no marriages or they just didn't bother writing them down for a period.

Should I add all the people who were born/married at Drumquin to a Townland category, or is it only for people meeting certain criteria?

Hi Matt, the categories are for anyone who has a connection to the said townland so yes of course you can everyone with a connection, however tenuous. Born, married, died or simply lived in a particular townland for a while. All are good for adding. Let me know if any you need are missing and I will create them.

David

Awesome. Magherenny is the townland, not sure of correct spelling :) I have a link to the parish book with the name written in it, in his profile.
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by Matt McNabb
Hi Matt. Magherenny, County Tyrone is actually a minor place name (i.e. not part of the historical administrative system) and not a townland. The parish is Termonamongan and the townland is Carnoughter. See PlacenamesNI. Tomorow I will check and make sure the Parish, Townland and 'Town' (which includes villages) categories have been created. Past midnight here now. David
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by David (Meredith) Loring
Just did a quick check and none of those exist so I will sort them out first thing tomorrow morning.
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by David (Meredith) Loring
OK. It's listed as a townland at https://www.townlands.ie/tyrone/longfield-east/ , are there different systems in place? The records are in the Langfield book https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0364
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by Matt McNabb

Hi Matt, yes indeed there are different systems. The parish Langfield is the ecclesiastical parish but we work on Civil Parishes. There are about 17 database queries I have to resolve for the Civil Parish of Termonamongan, and it looks as if you have just added another! I will check out Townlands but please be advised, at this stage, that for Northern Ireland PlacenamesNI is the final arbiter of a townland's attributes. Townlands.ie has many errors and Logainm.ie is a preferrable souce although we use all three sources. This is going to take me at least to late today to sort as each one can take half an hour or more to research. David
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by David (Meredith) Loring
OK, thank you for that. If it is any help, here is a birth record for one of my people from the civil registration, specifying Magherinny in the district of Drumquin: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03335/2222539.pdf (second row)

Oops, my error. There are two. Magherenny in the Civil Parish of Termonamongan and Magharenny in the Civil and RC Parish of Longfield East. I will check the Magharenny version now and get back to you.
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by David (Meredith) Loring
Hi Matt, only one problem with that parish and easily sorted. The Civil Parish of Longfield East category, and space are created as is the Townland of Magarenny.
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by David (Meredith) Loring
Sweet, thanks. That's fantastic. I've added my people to the townland category now and changed the spelling on their profiles to Magharenny.
posted on County Tyrone Team (merged) by Matt McNabb
Hi Matt, I have also added Drumquin District, Omagh SRD, County Tyrone since the name Drumquin is the name of the dispensary district in the Omagh Superintendent Registrar's District. You can additionally categorise your people under the dispensary district or SRD if you so wish. David

PS Drumquin is also a population centre. So I will create the town category for that as well.

PPS Drumquin village category should you need it.

I haven't actually gotten my Shane line back to Ireland from the US because there's a dead end where no one has been able to find the father of our common US Shane ancestor because he (the father) was pressed into service aboard a British Man of War back in 1745, before our ancestor was even born, and no one knows his or his wife's names. Since the family name is Shane and there's a family story about us being somehow connected with Shane's Castle, I am very interested in Northern Ireland and the Tyrone area. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done reverse genealogy... trying to find out from a certain pre-assumed ancestor who their descendants were and where they went! That would probably be a nightmare but may be the only option to connect the line.

My earliest McClintock ancestor was Alexander McClintock, c. 1585-c1630. His son was another Alexander, 1622-1670, he married Agnes Stenson MacLean, c. 1635-1696. The first Alexander was born at the southern end of Loch Lomond and was definetly in Co. Donegal by 1630 as he is on a Muster Roll. They settled in a house called Trintaugh near St Johnstown, and are buried in Taughboyne Church, Church Hill, St Johnstown.

One line of my maternal great grandparents are from County Tyrone. Surnames Buchanan and Quinn from the areas around Fivemiletown including Corcreevy and Gortmore. My 2xGGF James Buchanan emigrated to the US in Nov 1883 with his sister and five children. His wife Sarah Jane (Quinn) Buchanan was recently deceased, possibly in Gortmore in early 1883.

I just heard about a memorial stone near Castlefinn that has genealogical information on it for Snodgrasses, Brooks, and Wilkes. If anyone in the area knows about this stone pictures/transcription would be greatly appreciated.

Jason,

I am so excited to see this project. My 3rd great grandparents were Thomas Blain and Mary McGroarty of Killybegs. Thomas was of a family of Scottish origin, and Mary of Catholic background from an Inver family. He converted to Catholicism in order to marry her, and it is my understanding that the Blains in Kilkybegs today are all descended from him.

I am happy to help in any way I can
