Welcome to the Cortland County, New York Project!
Cortland County has an early beginning. It was part of Indian Territory until the American Revolution. It then was part of the Military Tract in 1781 which were lands set aside to compensate 2 regiments that were formed to protect the State's western section from the Engligh and Iroquois.
In 1683, Cortland County was part of Albany County. Then in 1771, Cortland became part of Tryon County. The name was changed to Montgomery County in 1784.
Then in 1791, Cortland became part of Herkimer County but was only there for 3 years when it became part of Onondaga when it split from Herkimer.
Finally in 1808, Cortland was formed when Onondaga was split.
