The Crawford Plantation[1] began as a 110 acre plantation originally part of a tract granted to Marg Grimball, belonging to John Beckett dec'd, then to son, and heir, James and Elizabeth Beckett. The Beckett family sold to James Crawford in 1784.[2]
Crawford sold the plantation to Thomas Baynard in 1802,[3] Thomas Baynard at an unknown date sold the property to Ephraim Mikell.[4][5]
Mikell left the property to his son Ephraim Mikell Jr.[5]
Crawford's then went to Ephraim Mikell Jr's son, William Archibald Mikell.[6]
William Archibald Mikell died about 1840, leaving a wife Hess, and 3 sons. The widow, Hess Mikell, married William Edings in 1844. The property had been left in trust for the widow Mikell and her children.[7] They used it as a summer residence. By this time the Crawford's tract and the Devants tract were combined.[8]
In 1847 the Crawford Devants property of 480 acres was sold to William James Whaley.[9]
The Whaley family lived at Crawford's until the Civil War. By 1861 they were told to evacuate Edisto Island. After the war they came back and William James Whaley lived there until his death in 1888. His son William James Whaley, Jr., inherited Crawford's Plantation.
After the Civil War
After the war the Crawford's Plantation "was occupied by 2 Freedmen Bureau teachers, Mary Ames and Emily Bliss, who were on Edisto Island between May 1865 and September 1866"[1]
