Crawford DNA Y-STR Group R1b
Welcome to the DNA page for the Crawford Name Study. Here you will find information about profiles who have been identified as testing with a Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b, and any related sub-groups.
There are many disconnected branches under R1b (it is one of the largest groups in the Crawford surname, and believed to only join all branches together sometime between 800 CE and 1500 CE, depends which branch you are part of). It is believed to be indicative of ancient Pictish Celtic ancestry, perhaps from the Damnonii tribe that lived in the Strathclyde area pre-Roman times (https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/who-were-nine-tribes-ancient-scotland-865992).
An important sub-group of the R1b category is known as group R1b-01A (Ardmillan). This line contains what is believed to be descendants of the Baidland/Ardmillan lineage, which may become important in the future. The current candidate for Clan Chief is Sir Robin Crawfurd, Baronet of Kilbirnie. However, Sir Robin has only daughters as heirs, and therefore after his time has passed, the Ardmillan and Kilbirnie branches will be searched for the most senior candidate that can be put forward for the Clan Crawford Association's effort to re-establish a Clan Chief. Accordingly, we will create a category for this sub-group and attempt to link those profiles on WikiTree. We encourage anyone in that sub-category to reach out with help on any brick walls as this will assist the Clan in finding their next senior candidate.
