How to create a Wikipedia Citation

Although simple, it can be quite hard to find the citation unless you know where to look!

In the very top left hand side is a box with threee horizontal lines - that opens a menu:

Opening the menu.

Open the menu and you'll see

The menu.

Select "Cite this page", which will open another page. Click the Chicago link, or just scroll down the page until you see the Chicago heading

Citations page.

There you'll find the citation which you can copy and paste:

The Chicago format citation.

The copied link looks like this:

Wikipedia contributors, "Sir John Eyles, 2nd Baronet," Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_John_Eyles,_2nd_Baronet&oldid=1038370128 (accessed March 15, 2023).

Hidden Links

If you want to make it a bit tidier (a "hidden" link), copy and delete just the URL part:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_John_Eyles,_2nd_Baronet&oldid=1038370128

and paste it in front of the part you want to use as the link title or description, making sure there is a space after the URL

Wikipedia contributors, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_John_Eyles,_2nd_Baronet&oldid=1038370128 "Sir John Eyles, 2nd Baronet," Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, (accessed March 15, 2023).

Then add a square bracket each side, an opening one [ in front of the link and a closing one ] after "Sir John Eyles, 2nd Baronet," and add the ref tags.

<ref>Wikipedia contributors, [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sir_John_Eyles,_2nd_Baronet&oldid=1038370128 "Sir John Eyles, 2nd Baronet,"] Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, (accessed March 15, 2023).</ref>

That should give you a citation that looks like this:[1]

Note: When using square brackets to make a hidden link, always include a descriptive title between the URL and the closing square bracket, otherwise it will just show as a number [1] which can be confused with the citation numbers, but doesn't link to the citations in the sources section below.
