Adding a Profile to this Study
Please avoid adding every Cresap profile to this Study. See List of Cresap Profiles below, to get a sorted list of every Cresap profile on WikiTree.
The criteria for adding a Cresap profile to the study are:
- Add a Cresap profile to this study if their Cresap ancestor is currently unknown.
- Add a Cresap profile to this study if they are Adopted. See the "Adopted" section below for more information.
- The top level progenitors of the main Cresap families have already been added to the study.
To add your ancestor to this study, simply copy the following template to the Biography section of his or her profile:
Once the profile is connected to the main Cresap family line, then remove the template from the profile.
Process
- Take existing Cresap profiles on WikiTree, and use records found on FamilySearch.org, and Find A Grave, to reconstruct pedigree as much as possible
- Find other Cresaps on FamilySearch.org and Find A Grave, add them to WikiTree, reconstruct pedigree or find where they fit in existing families
- Find any historical newspaper references to any Cresap in the United States
- Find any histories of the Cresap family, whether books, previous personal research, or other written materials. Use these to compare against primary records.
Cresap Genealogy
History
The history of the Cresap family has been thoroughly researched and best described in the book, The History of the Cresaps, which was compiled by Benarr Cresap and his father, Joseph Ord Cresap. Please see this book (available free online) for much more information on the history of this family.
Even though the family history has been well researched, the book does contain some errors, which are corrected here on WikiTree to the best of our knowledge.
Name Variations
Cresap is the standard spelling of the last name, however, there are descendants that have Creasap as a spelling variation.

- This book is the main source for Cresap family genealogy. It is long and comprehensive, though it does have an occasional mistake on some data, especially on distant descendants. Other sourcing should be used for verification.
- Cresap society. [from old catalog], and James Walter Thomas. The Cresap Society Meeting At Cumberland, Md: June 14th, 1919. Columbus, Ohio: The F. J. Heer printing co., 1919.
