  • "Cumbrian Ancestors - Notes for Genealogical Searchers", Cumbria Archive Service, September 1988, ISBN 0 905404 40 8, contains much useful background information and detailed lists of primary records held in Carlisle, Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness. There are useful maps of the diocese and parish boundaries and their changes over time. (newer edition now available)
  • "A Place Name Index of Habitations in Cumberland (Houses and Settlements)", compiled by Freda Jackson, Cumbria Family History Society, 1997, ISBN 1 871420 07 5, is very useful for standardising the spelling of many place names, locating them in the correct parish and indicating other possibilities. A Map reference, using the UK National Grid to the Ordnance Survey maps, is given for every location.

For sources in Penrith between 1556 and 1812, the Transcription of the church records of St Andrews Church by John Francis Haswell is well worth looking at. Although the link is on Family Search, it does not seem to have been fed into their database for searches, and of course it avoids the FS confusion on pre-1752 dates. It is at:
