Introduction

Archibald Hilliard Davis, b. June 3, 1799/d. Nov. 18, 1854, was the son of Archibald Davis (1766-1821) & Elizabeth Jane Hilliard (1769-1816), who inherited what would become Cypress Hall Plantation, along with 13 slaves, when his father died in 1821. Archibald & Elizabeth Hilliard-Davis had married in 1789, and had 12 Children, 10 of which survived to adulthood. When Archibald Jr. inherited the plantation from his father, at that time it contained 1153 acres. Archibald Sr.'s entire holdings in 1821 was nearly 5000 acres of land, with nearly 100 Slaves, which were divided up among his children. Archibald H. Davis married 1st in 1827 to Lucy Cargill Massenburg (b. Dec. 31, 1802/d. May 7, 1835), no children; 2nd, on Oct. 19, 1837, to Caroline Cornelia Kearney (dau/of William Kinchen Kearney & Maria Alston, of Warren Co., NC), with whom he had 6 children. Archibald's 1st wife was the sister of the owner of Woodleaf Plantation, a.k.a. the Massenburg Plantation, Nicholas B. Massenburg.[1]
