L'Hérault est un département Français, créé à la Révolution française, le 4 mars 1790 en application de la loi du 22 décembre 1789, à partir d'une partie de l'ancienne province de Languedoc. Il comprend les pays du Biterrois, de l'Espinouse, du Lodèvois, du Montpelliérais et une partie du Larzac.

Depuis la réforme territoriale de 2014, l'Hérault fait partie de la région Occitanie.

La préfecture du département est Montpellier.


Hérault is a department in southern France. Since the 2014 territorial reform, it is part of is one of the Occitanie region.

Hérault was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Languedoc. It includes the traditional "pays" of Biterrois (Béziers), Espinouse, Lodèvois, Montpelliérais and part of Larzac.

The capital of the department is Montpellier.
