Description of Error - 213: Missing fathers DNA confirmation

Father is marked "confirmed with DNA", but the words "paternal" and "confirmed" do not appear in the biography.

Content of info column: Empty.

Possible Causes

  • There is no statement on the profile explaining how DNA was used to confirm the relationship.
  • There is a confirmation statement on the profile, but it’s not in the expected format.

Action Steps

  • In each of these situations, change the paternal status from ‘confirmed with DNA’ to ‘confident’ or 'uncertain' as appropriate:
    • No DNA tests are displayed in the ‘DNA tested’ section on the right side of the profile.
    • Only one DNA test is displayed in the 'DNA tested’ section.
    • No children are displayed and the profiled person didn’t take a DNA test.
  • If there is a non-standard confirmation statement:
    • If the statements does not provide enough information, Private Message the PM information including these instructions Help:DNA_Confirmation and ask the PM to add a confirmation statement in the correct format. Offer assistance if needed.
  • If there are two or more tests displayed, and they may or may not support the paternal relationship, leave this message on the profile:
    • Please add a statement to this profile explaining how you used DNA to confirm his/her relationship to his/her parents. See this page for how to do that: Help:DNA_Confirmation. (Offer assistance if needed if the PM is active. If no statement is provided with enough information to mark the relationship confirmed with DNA--suggest a change to ‘confident’.)

Error Status

For each Error you can set status. You can set it as Corrected, Not corrected, False Error, Proposed merge or just add a Comment.

Hi, as the result of a question on G2G I've just realised that a lot of my profiles will show this error (which I didn't know existed before) because where it is a child of an MRCA couple i've written "Parental relationships are confirmed" rather than "Paternal and Maternal relationships are confirmed." All have a DNA source, but is it worth either updating the data doctor report to include Parental or updating the guidance to reflect the need to include both?

Thanks

Hi Natasha,

This checks on all profiles with the father relation set as DNA confirmed. it checks in the bio if the text Confirmed and Paternal appears in the biography. If it doesn't, it generates the suggestion. Check the Action Steps above to resolve this issue. Concerning your query there is another suggestion for Maternal DNA confirmation so using Parental would currently not clear your suggestions. I will however ask Ales his view on adding parental.

Hi Natasha,

Further to my message of yesterday. You will need to amend your comment to profiles to the singular use of either paternal or maternal depending on the profile's gender. Please note these DNA suggestions are under guidance from the DNA project.

All the best Janet

May I suggest that the guidance page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:DNA_Confirmation is updated to make this clear.

Possibly something like "It is important that the words "maternal" or "paternal" together with "confirmed" are used in any DNA source, as otherwise this will produce an error. In particular, in the case of children of the MCRAs "parental relationships are confirmed" is insufficent." It sounds a point of detail, but from my perspective "parental relationships are confirmed" should be sufficient in this situation and it will avoid others making the same error. I do find that some of the data doctor error checks accidentally pick up phrasing rather than something that needs adjusting. In this case it should help both data doctors and members save time.

are DNA confirmations using Logic or direct one on one testing?

Logically, descendants of a person on 2 lines match. Such as, myself to my father's, g-grandfather's, sister's, g-grandchild. confirming descendancy of the shared ancestor and therefore the line of ancestors in between? Logically, my father is confirmed by DNA if his brother and I match One on one; my self to my uncle who has been matched by reported DNA testing?

what is the protocol for using GEDmatch to update a profile? I updated the profile but when I try saving it, I get a 213 error.
Hi, Denise

Is the profile of a direct family member and on a profile you manage? If so, please read the description at the top of this page which states:

Father is marked "confirmed with DNA," but the words "paternal" and "confirmed" do not appear in the biography.

The description also says that the DNA Project oversees this error. There is an app link that might help there also.

You are relatively new to WikiTree, so we suggest you contact a leader or PC of the DNA Project listed on its project page if you need further assistance.

For us to investigate further, we need the link to the profile that generated this suggestion.

Thanks for responding! The person I wrote about is Smith-244124. I have his death date as Mar 18, 1930 per his gravestone. GEDCOM has it as Mar 17, 1931. Where did GEDCOM get its info? I changed another profile based on the GEDCOM data.

Also, when I compare Green-41672 to the GEDCOM, the GEDCOM lists parents and siblings which I do not have. How do I know that the GEDCOM is accurate before I add them to my part of the tree?

Hi, Denise

To check any specific information, we need the link to what you are reviewing. If there is a link to the gedcom and gedcom compare, please email it to me at [email address removed] Any questions should be on the profile or link to the report, not on the suggestion page; in this case Suggestion 213. The messages go only to the Data Doctors Project management team, of which I am one member.
