Sabrina (Bishop-Smith) Pickersgill (15.1cM)
Ember Scott (20.2cM): Also matches Edward Fox.

FTDNA kit: 886181
Markers Tested: 111 (Big-Y 700)
Y-chromosome haplogroup: R-BY96587 (downstream from R-U152)
  • 111 marker Y-DNA test results from FTDNA are in. Surprisingly, my only 111 marker match is to a Fox line where Patrick Fox (abt. 1784 - 1857) is the earliest known ancestor. I'll be concentrating efforts on porting his tree over from Ancestry (thank you, D. Bateman for sharing!) in an attempt to figure out the connection between the Fox and Bolin lines. Also, I have two 37 marker matches to testers with the surname of Bullen.
  • I have two Whitlock matches and one Washburn match at 67 markers, so I've joined the Whitlock DNA project at FTDNA. Per Peter Whitlock of the Whitlock Family Association, these matches descend from James Whitlock (1651-1716), who immigrated to Virginia in the 1670s. So, the mystery and brick wall that is my 4x paternal great-grandfather, Eli Bolin, has taken a surprising twist. Thanks to Y-DNA testing, those of us researching Eli and our line now have some incredible leads on where to look next.
  • The Fox tester and I have been moved to haplogroup R-BY96587 on FTDNA's Big Y Block Tree, which looks to be downstream from our original haplogroup, R-BY65752. The Whitlock tester remains a Big-Y match, but also remains in R-BY65752. My placement on the Big Tree at ytree.net has not changed.
  • New Big-Y match! Surname of tester is Fenner. Mr. Fenner (who has a WikiTree profile...yea!) and I do not match at any level of STR testing, but I do have a 67 marker match to another Fenner tester. This indicates that we may not share a common male ancestror within the last 1000 years or so. Also, I now have only ten private SNP variants.
  • I have a new Y-DNA match at 12 - 111 markers! The last name of this tester is Bulley and he has a paper trail for his line that leads back to the mid-1700s in Devon, England. Bullen is a known variant of Bulley and Bolin is a known variant of Bullen, so it seems that my Bolin/Bohlen line is a branch of this Bulley line that has roots in Devon, England. More testing needed to validate this connection.
  • A first cousin of my Fox match at 12 - 111 markers and at Big-Y has tested and we are a match at the same levels. Like my first Fox match, this man descends from Patrick Fox (abt. 1784 - 1857). This test result confirms that these first cousins share the same grandfather and also confirms that my Bolin/Bohlen line shares the same paternal line as this Fox line.
  • I have a new Y-DNA match at 12 - 111 markers to another man with the surname of Bulley. This Bulley tester also matches both of my Fox matches at 12 - 67 markers and, like me, has matches to Whitlock and Fenner testers at 67 markers. This confirms that my paternal Bolin/Bohlen line and the Bulley line from Devon, England are one and the same. It also confirms that the Fox and Bulley lines share the same paternal ancestor, who most likely once lived in Devon, England.
  • I have a new Y-DNA match at 37 markers and it is my 2nd cousin, D.M. Bohlen. We match at a Genetic Distance of zero and D.M.'s matches and corresponding Genetic Distances are exactly like mine. These results confirm that my genetic connections to the Bulley's of Devon and the Fox's of Newfoundland are not due to some NPE in the Bolin line's recent past, but that our entire Bolin line is also connected to these families.

DNA Confirmations

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Steven Bohlen and his mother, Gloria Rose. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: Parent/Child, based on sharing 3,436 cM across 65 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Steven Bohlen, FTDNA kit #886181, and his 2nd cousin, D.M. Bohlen, match at a Genetic Distance of 0 on 37 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA James William Bohlen. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 4 generations is 83.49%.
