History

• 1882 fire - 30 Jewish homes burned^[1]
• "In the fire of 1909, the center of the town, the Beth Midrash and the synagogue were completely destroyed and were never restored. Many Dorbyan Jews emigrated to Canada, South Africa, America and Eretz–Yisrael."^[1]
• 1897: there were 2,059 residents; 1,129 (55%) of them were Jews. (Russian Census)^[1]
• 1923: there were 1,018 residents; 601 (59%) were Jews.^[1]
• June 24, 1941: Germans arrive
• late June 1941: about 500 Jews are killed.^[2][3]
  • note: are their names somewhere? Only numbers on the town memorials. YadVashem shows 447 results for Darbenai, but that doesn't mean they died there, just that they had a relation to that place
