This diary has been provided by Darrell Spencer (with permission to share); who completed the transcription of his great great grandfather Dave Carroll Taylor's diary. He transcribed it in 2002, and there is a hard copy in the Smithville Library. Words in italic are the corrected names/words as provided by Darrell. Additional notes made by Kristina Wheeler start with KW at the end of the section.

In working through the material, it appears that he copied information from older books into this one as some dates are prior to the date he purchased this book. Some variances have been seen between his date and the death date, this will be investigated. This may be the date he heard about the death, but in some cases, his date is earlier then the "known date"

Preface^[1]

Reverend David Carroll Taylor (1851-1934) was my Great-Great Grandfather. He was the son of John C. “Butcher John” Taylor and Nancy Plunkett. This book is a transcription of his diary where he recorded marriages that he performed and kept death records of some of the citizens of DeKalb County. He also kept up with some of the local happenings in DeKalb County. D. C. “Preacher Dave” Taylor married twice, his first spouse being Margaret Trusty, the daughter of Moses Allen Trusty and Amy Ellis. Preacher Dave’s second spouse was Josephine Summers, the widow of Chesley Taylor.

I have transcribed his diary as close to the original as possible without making changes. I have kept the spelling as he originally wrote. Any additions I have made I enclosed in brackets [] and words that I could not decipher I have highlighted in yellow. Preacher Dave passed away and members of his family added some deaths and marriages into his diary. Entries made by others than Preacher Dave are in italics.
