Many "trees" gave Desmond a wife named Elizabeth Christina York Slatton, daughter of William Slatton. Elizabeth is also given a husband surnamed CARTEE. Miss Slatton never married Desmond Spearman and has no antecedents named York in her family lines. This is proven this beyond doubt with Probate records for William Slatton, her father and her own estate as a Cartee when she died. There are no records of Slaton (various spellings) marrying a York during this era. It may be reasonably concluded that Christine was a York and unrelated in any way to the Slaton families of South Carolina

In the 1850 census for David Desmond Spearman in South Carolina, his wife is listed as Christiana. Her find-a-grave names her as York.(also as Slatton)

The surname York is persistent. Assuming it has a factual basis, I took my research toward York. The Spearmans had a tradition of naming children for relatives and forbears. Working on that, I think I have a correct York line for Christiana. The major problem is that there are, until 1850, no documents to prove connections. There are census records beginning in 1790. And there are many poorly documented trees on Ancestry and Wikitree, as well as find a graves without headstones and not in the same cemeteries.

So here goes. Among the names of the sons and grandsons of Desmond Spearman are JAMES, WILLIAM, JEREMIAH, JOHN WILLIAM, JESSE, JEFFREY, RICHARD, JOSEPH and CALVIN.

In the York line descended from Jeremiah York and Sarah Seymour, we find sons and grandsons, JEREMIAH, JESSE, JOHN WILLIAM, RICHARD, JEFFREY, CALVIN.

In both the Spearman and York lines, the men married women LNABs, McDaniel, Smith, Bryson, Hamby.

Desmond had 3 wives: Mary Smith, Christine(York) and Nancy named in his will. Mary is named on his son Jeremiah's death record but she would be dead by 1850. when Christine is in his census., who is dead before the 1860 census. There is a Calvin York living close by Desmond in 1850, born about the same time as Christine. Calvin married Elizabeth Smith. Only her mother's name is known, as she was living with them. She was possibly the widow of J. I. Smith. and she was born about 1786 and died before the 1860 census.

I have census records for Richard York, who I think is Christine's father. Calvin York looks to be a nephew of Richard. Richard is possibly a son of John William York, who died in Laurens County

There were only two York families in 1800 in the Pendleton District, which later was Anderson County.

(as there was only one in 1790, it might be presumed that the younger man was the son of the older man and would be about 26 years old)

The other son for the older Richard York, 1790 census, was probably

THESE WERE THE ONLY YORK FAMILIES IN THE PENDLETON DISTRICT BETWEEN 1790 AND 1810.

I believe this is Christiann's father The DNA Match refers to several lines of Yorks in North and South Carolina several "trees" list various children - none proven as he left no will and not all "trees" agree on names and fates of children BUT he is the only YORK in Anderson County when Christiann was born
