Introduction
David Hunt was born in New Jersey and migrated to Mississippi in the early 1800's to support his uncle, Abijah Hunt. In the time period 1800-1861, Hunt had as many as 25 plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana (not all at the same time) and enslaved as many as 1,000 persons. By some calculations, he was judged to be the 7th richest person in the United States.
Initially, Hunt worked with his uncle Abijah, in conjunction with a number of stores. When Abijah died in 1851, David inherited some of his plantations: Woodlawn, Huntley, Argyle, Belle Ella.
Married three times, he inherited a number of plantations from his third wife, Ann Ferguson, who was the daughter of one of the earliest planters in the Mississippi Territory.
Hunt's primary residence was at Woodlawn Plantation, which served as his headquarters and hosted a school for training his slaves in various skills that would be useful on his other plantations.
Before his death in 1861, Hunt passed most of his plantations on to his surviving children.
