Weems Genealogy From Maryland Genealogies Volume II

A contribution to the history of the Weems family is furnished in the record from a Bible originally the property of Gustavus Weems (1779-1852) of Marshes Seat, Anne Arundel County, who was a nephew of “Parson” Mason Locke Weems. The Bible was recently presented to the Enoch Pratt Free Library by Harriette Weems, a descendant of the original owner. Published in 1838, by DeSilver of Philadelphia, it contains in Gustavus Weems’ careful hand a full pedigree of the family from Scotch David Weems’s firstborn in 1725, down to the death of his own lastborn in 1845—three generations.

The Ages and Deaths of my Wife’s Children In the First Marriage viz.

Wm Weems son of David Weems & Eliza his Wife was born the 5th day of Decr 1725. Was drownded on the 18th March 1751 between Cape Good Hope & St. Helena on a four years voige East India.

John Weems 2nd son Born March 26th 1727. Departed this life the 28th November 1794, aged 68 years.

David Weems 3rd son Born Sep 22nd 1729 Died 12th March 1845 (sic)* 1 Days Illness aged 16 years. [*1745 almost certainly intended here]

James Weems 4th Son Born May 22nd 1731 Died 4th Nov. 1784 Aged 53 years.

Lock Weems 5th Son Born Feby 25th 1733 Died 27th May 1734 Aged 1 year.

Lock Weems 6th Son Born Feby 3rd 1735 Died 16th March 1753* and was buried in London in St. Andrew’s Church by Capt. Luke Lane. [* possibly a misreading of the original since Lock Weems will was dated 1761 and probated in 1764. Likely he died in 1763. Fives and sixes look a lot alike in old script.]

Thomas Lane Weems 7th Son Born Feby 24th 1737 (and last) Died 11 Feby 1779 Aged 42 years.

My dear and loving wife Elizabeth Lane Mother of the above seven children Departed this Life on 26th June 1738 and left six of the above children to bring up.

Willimina Weems 3rd Born 19th Feby 1744. Died Apl 30 1744.

Susannah Weems Born 4th March 1745 Died Oct. 16th 1805

David Weems 5th Born 22 Feb 1747. Died March 4th 1747.

David Weems 6th Born 31 Mar. 1748 Died March 30th 1750.

David Weems 7th Born 8th June 1750. Dead Born.

David Weems 8th Born Augst 1751 Died 22 Jany 1820 Aged 68 5/12

Mason Lock Weems 12th Born Oct 1st 1759 Died in Beaufort Ct South Carrolina May 23rd 1825 Aged 65 7/12

My dear and loving wife Ester Weems Mother of the Above 12 children Died 29th Apl 1776, Illness 5 days, Aged 59.

David Weems Father of the Above Children and those on the first page amounting to 19 Died on the 5th of May 1779 Aged 73 years.

David Weems and Margaret Harrison Was Married April 15th 1777

David Weems son of David and Margaret Weems his Wife Born March 2nd 1778 had the smallpox, mumps, H. Cof and measeles, was prest by the British and so often moved at last became a Brittish subject.

Gustavus Weems 2nd Son Born April 2, 1779 had the small pox, mumps, H.Coff and measles & much trouble Died 3 October 1859 73 Y 6 mo

Rachel Weems 3rd Born August 16th 1780 Married Jesse Ewell May 24 1804 and Died the 28th May 1817 leaving 3 Children David, Frances and Margaret and was Buried in H. Creek Church yard, Sermond preached by Js Reed Ye must be Born Again, 37 year.
