Introduction

Very few Davis lines in the world are members of subclades of Y-DNA haplogroup R1a. This research area of the Davis Name Study will focus on Davis lines that are Y-DNA haplogroup R-A12236 or below as determined by testing with FamilyTreeDNA.

View the current list of grouped matching men by:

  1. Navigate to https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Davis?iframe=ycolorized
  2. Change the search from "Kit Number" to "Subgroup Name"
  3. Enter Davis, William b 1658 MD in the third box and press the search icon

This will return a list of the tested matching men assigned to the group. As of Jul 2023, that includes confirmed haplogroups R-A12236 and R-A12237, as well as several men with an estimated or confirmed haplogroup of the very early R-M198. Davis men who haven't taken a Big Y test yet but are R1a (usually shown as R-M198) are considered part of this group if they Y-DNA match to a Davis with these haplogroups.

Only about 2% of Y-DNA tested Davis men in the world are members of haplogroup R1a. About half of them are members of this line.

Research Goals

Our research goals include:

  • Trace back each Y-DNA tested member of this group to their earliest known Davis ancestor.
  • Attempt to identify the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) between as many matches as possible.
  • Attempt to bridge from earliest known ancestors to European roots.
  • Identify additional Davis candidates for Y-DNA testing - and upgrade more tests to Big Y-700 to understand when branches occurred.
  • Educate members about their Davis history.

How to Participate

We'd love for every Davis who is a member of one of these R1a haplogroups (or Y-DNA matches to one of them) to:

  • Create your own WikiTree profile (minimal detail is fine)
  • Attach your Y-DNA kit#, test level, and haplogroup (known or estimated) to your profile.
  • Create a WikiTree profile for your father and Davis grandfather. Your tree needs to go back to at least the grandfather of your earliest living Davis ancestor. If your father is deceased, that's YOUR grandfather. If your father is living it needs to go to HIS Davis grandfather. This is because WikiTree privatizes information about living people and their parents - and we need your line to reach back to a public Davis record.
  • It's very helpful if you can go back farther on your Davis line, but others can take over if you choose not to do so.
  • Contact Kevin Ireland for assistance.

Haplotree

The current haplotree for this group, as of Jul 2023 is:

Likely Early Ancestors

We have a significant amount of work to do on adding and expanding WikiTree profiles to support these conclusions. However, we believe as of Jul 2023 that some of the early Davis men in these lines include:

Known R-A12236 (and descendant subclade) men on WikiTree
