Dayton, Ohio was laid out on 4 Nov 1795. Forty-six people drew lots for early settlement and, in April of 1796, they left from Cincinnati to settle the new town. The boat landed at the head of St. Clair Street and Mrs. Catherine Thompson, wife of Samuel Thompson, was the first settler to step ashore. Other early pioneers were siblings William, Benjamin, and Mary Van Cleve, George and William Newcom, the Widow McClure and her 4 children, Abraham Glassmire, William Chenowith, James Morris, Daniel Ferrel, Thomas Hamer, Jonathan Mercer, William Gahagan, and John and Thomas Davis.
