- Victims: 9 immediate deaths, at least 2 of the 11 rescued died consequently
- Cause: Explosion
- The explosion occurred at lunch time. It was standard practice for young boys to bring the men's food into the colliery. It is believed that two of these boys entered the workings whilst carrying candles for illumination. It was these naked flames that probably ignited a pocket of gas. Two of these boys were among the dead.
