This Indenture made this Eleventh day of August in the year of
our lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty three Between Carter
Braxton of the County of King William esquire of the one part and
Augustine Claiborne of Sussex County of the other part where as the
said Carter Braxton at the time of the Sealing and Delivering of these
Presents Stands Indebted to the said Augustine Claiborne in the full
quantity of two hundred & seventy four Thousand nine Hundred
& fifty nine Pounds of Crops fine priced Tobacco of the Appamattax
Warehouse Inspection or of Pages Warehouses on Parmunkey River as by
five several Bonds by the said Carter Braxton and Herbert Claiborne
his security to the said Augustine Claiborne sealed and Delivered and
to him Payable as in the said Bonds at expressed will appear and
for as much as the said Carter Braxton is truely willing and desirous
farther to secure to the said Augustine Claiborne his Executors Administra
=tors and assigns the Just and Punctual Payment of the said tobacco in
manner & form as in the sayd Several Bonds expressed and set Down with all
Interest from that Date arising thereon This Indeture therefore wit=
nesseth that the said Carter Braxton for and in consideration of the
Remises but more Especial of five Shillings to the said Carter Braxton
by the said Augustine Claiborne will & truly Paid at or before the Deal
ing and Delivery of these Presents the Receipt whereof the said Carter
Braxton doth hereby acknowledge he the said Carter Braxton hath
bargained Sold and Delivered & by these Presents doth bargain Sell

and Deliver unto the said Augustine Claiborne his Heirs and Assignees
for ever the following Negroes Slaves to him the said Carter Braxton
now belonging that is to say Simon, James, Malbrough, Billey
London, James Boatswain, Abram, Joe, Stephen, James Will,
Andrew, Harrison, Randolph, Davy, Harvey, Bob, Frank,
Matt, Daniel, George, Isaac, Tom, Ralph, Dick, Tom Cyrus,
Billy, Davy, Joseph, Sue, Delph, Alice, Dido, Harriett, Mercia,
Phillis, Lucy, Lett, Rachel, Jinty, Jukey, to hold to the said
Augustine Claiborne his Heirs & assignes to the following uses In-
tents Trusts and purposes that is to say that should the said Carter
Braxton his Executors and Administrators fail on his part to
Discharge and make Payment of the aforementioned quantity
of Tobacco in manner and form and if the several Days sit down
and Expressed in the said several Bonds with all Interest
arising thereon from and after the date of these Presents that he the said
Augustine Claiborne his Executors Administrators or Assignes shall
on such failure have full Right and Lawfull Authority to Sell
and dispose of such and so many of the said Slaves with such of the
Increase of the said females as will Raise money sufficient to
Pay off and Discharge the Said Tobacco and all Interest arising
thereon and the Costs Charges and Expences attending this trust by he the
said Augustine Claiborne being the day of the date of these Presents
in the actual possession of the said Slaves evidenced by the said

Carter Braxton delivering over to the said Augustine Claiborne the afore
named Negroes in the name of all the Rest of the said negroes
and to receive and take the money arising from such sale or sales
in satisfaction of his Demand aforesaid and after satisfying his said
Demands to Recovery the Residue of any to that said Carter Braxton
& to have & to hold the said slaves & In (illegible) use to no other end & purpose
whatsoever and the said Carter Braxton for himself his Heirs
Executors & administrators doth Covenant promis & grant and agree
to & with the said Augustine Claiborne his Executors administrators
and Assignes and to and with every of them that he the said Carter
Braxton and his Heirs the Slaves aforesaid with their Increase
for the use Trusts and Purposes afrorementioned shall and will
warrant & forever Defend by these presents In Witness whereof the
said Carter Braxton hereunto set his hand and affixed his Seal
this day and year before written Sealed and Delivered
