Fact: Caroline (9) was living with Cornelius H Demaree (54 - born about 1796 in Kentucky) and Mary V Demaree (7) in Jefferson, Missouri in 1850.
Fact: Mary Virginia (Demaree) Blake died on 18 Nov 1930 in Cedar, Missouri, United States. She was born on 14 Mar 1843. Her parents are listed as Cornelius Demaree & Delphine Keeper.[1]
Conclusion: Caroline's parents are Cornelius and Delphine Keeper.
2) Who were Cornelius & Delphine?
Cornelius married Delphina Keepers in 1828-1840 in St-Louis (St Louis), Missouri, United States. His parents are listed as Cornelius & Phoebe Demaree.[2] On the 15th of November 1837, therefore, I married Cornelius Demare, (baptized by a non-Catholic) a dispensation of conception under the disparity of worship, and Delphine Keepers, a daughter of the marriage of James Keepers and Marie Elder, as witnessed by Witnesses: Aloysius Keepers, Elisa Chandler, James Keepers, Mary Keepers and others And then there is the signature of the priest beside the witnesses.
It means that Cornelius' parents were Protestant but that he was baptized a Catholic (converted to Catholicism) before the marriage, and that Delphine was the daughter of a legitimate Catholic marriage. It definitely does not mean that Delphine was not a Catholic. The point of the two words "filiam ... conjugum" which state that she is the daughter of the marriage of her parents is to demonstrate that she was born a Catholic. Listing her that way with her parents shows she is entitled to be married in the Catholic Church. Cornelius, having protestant parents, had to be baptized by a Catholic priest as a condition of getting the dispensation to allow the marriage. Delphine is a French given name. She was likely of French or French Canadian descent. There were a lot of French Canadians in Missouri around that time, including many of my husband's relatives. A pretty common situation in the melting pot of Missouri in 1837. By the way, the marriage record does not list Cornelius' parents as is stated in the profile. And by the ancestry given for the Demare family in early New Jersey, I would think it was a good bet that his family were historically French Huguenots, protestant.e
Possible second marriage: A Cornelius Demaree married Lucinda Longwith on 26 Jan 1853 in Jefferson, Missouri, United States.[3] They had a child: Annie, daughter of Cornelius Demaree & Lucinda Eckels, died (age 67) on 17 Jun 1928 in Louisiana, United States. [4]
3) Who were Cornelius & Phoebe, Cornelius' parents?
Two possibilities per the research notes: Cornelius Demaree (1761-abt.1847) and Femmetie "Phoebe" (Brouwer) Demaree (1763-1810). They were among the Dutch-descended families that went from the New Netherland region to Conewago County, Pennsylvania, and thence to Kentucky, where they are considered part of "Low Dutch Kentucky" (see Low Dutch Settlements in Kentucky). Alternately, for his parents, there is a Cornelius Demaree who married Polly Waddle on 14 Nov 1810 in Mercer, Kentucky, United States. This is possibly the same Cornelius with a second marriage as Phoebe died in 1810 per Find A Grave. [5] Polly Waddle is actually Mary (Polly) Gilkerson who married William Waddle on 7 Jan 1799 in Botetourt, Virginia.[6]
Why would Cornelius, a member or former member of the Dutch Reform Church, have a son baptized Catholic?
Charity Demaree, daughter of Cornelius, married Peter Vandarsall 13 Aug 1809 in Mercer, Kentucky.
Why would Cornelius b New Jersey have died in New York?
From Find A Grave: Cornelius & Phoebe - children listed as 1) Daniel H Demaree (1787-1837) 2) Rachel Demaree Smock (1793-1864) 3) Phebe Brewer Demaree Randolph (1798-1890)
Plus on the WT profile 4) Charity Geertie Demaree Van Arsdale (1789-1857)
