All categories in the dual language tree at the level of the country and above have already been created. This page is for creating the categories below the country level. All of these categories are currently being created solely in the Danish Language and will be included on the Danish side of the category tree under Category:Danmark (At a later time, when higher priority category tasks have been completed and volunteers are available, parallel language streams of the mid level categories may be created for use with the AKA system).

Duchy of Slesvig

For purposes of simplicity in categories, the three amter which were part of the Duchy of Slesvig in 1864 and which returned to Denmark in 1920 are treated as being part of Denmark in the period prior to 1864, so that only one category is needed in the time period for 1793-1970. See the amter categories below. If a different pattern is adopted later, it can be easily changed as these are higher level categories.

Basic Instructions for Creating Categories for Sogne in the Spreadsheet

Spreadsheet Columns and Denmark Category Structure

Project Denmark is in the process of creating a google spreadsheet with the information needed to create sogne (parish) categories and properly nest them in Wikitree's Category Tree without the need for familiarity with Denmark's history or geography.

• This spreadsheet has most of the information needed to create categories for those sogne which appear in the sheet. The rest of the information is usually available through the Danish (not the English) side of Wikipedia.
• Please copy the category names directly from the spreadsheet to make sure you are picking up the proper extra characters in the Danish language and including the information for nearby sogne when needed.
• To connect the categories to WikiTree's category tree, follow the inverted pyramid diagram.
• Category: Danmark is above the entire pyramid.
• Each level of the pyramid shows you which, and how many, parent catgories are usually needed at that level. For example, most sogne categories will get three parents: a herred category, a 1970-2006 kommune category, and a post 2007 kommune category. Sogne categories do not get amter categories as direct parents. As the pyramid shows, there is always a level between the sogne level and the amt level.
1. Find the relevant sogn in column A (Sogn (Parish) Category Name) of the Spreadsheet. This column contains the correct name for the sogn category.
• If the sogn you want is not in the spreadsheet, please contact someone on the Project Denmark Categorization Subproject for help unless you are very familiar with Danish history and geography and the categorization guidelines for Denmark.
• Be very careful with any sogn category name that contains the phrase "nær ved" which means near. This is an indication that there are multiple sogne in Denmark with the same name. What follows the phrase is the name of another sogne that this sogn is very close to on a map. That information can help you make sure you have the correct line in the spreadsheet for the sogn you want.
2. Direct parent categories for the sogn category - row of the pyramid directly above sogn
• Look in columns B, E and G for the category names of the categories which will be direct parent categories for the sogn category.
• All sogne will have at least 1 entry in columns B, E and G. Most will have all 3.
• Sogne categories do not get amter categories as direct parents. As the pyramid shows, there is always a level between the sogne level and the amt level.
3. Higher level category for the 1970 Kommune Category (Column E)
• If there is a category name in Column E, it will need a 1970 - 2006 amter category parent to connect it to the Category Tree.
• All the 1970 - 2006 amter categories have been created. The information on which 1970 - 2006 amt a sogn is located in is in column F of the spreadsheet.
4. Higher level category for the 2007 Kommune Category (Column G)
• If there is a category name in Column G, it will need a region category parent to connect it to the Category Tree.
• All the region categories have been created. The information on which region a sogn is located in is in column H of the spreadsheet.
5. Higher level category for the Herred Category (Column B)
• If there is a category name in Column B, one of its direct parent categories will be Category: Danmark[1]
• In order for the Herreder subcategories to sort into the proper group on the Category:Danmark page, you will need to use a sort key on the Danmark parent category on the category page for the Herred. To do this, copy the following text substituting the words before the word Herred in Column B of the spreadsheet for name.
•
• Example: on Category: Aars Herred, Danmark, the parent Category: Danmark is entered as
• If there are category names in columns C, D, I, J, and/or K, each of these categories is an additional parent for the herred category in Column B.
6. Higher level categories for the categories in columns C, D, I, J, and K
• Each of the categories listed in columns C, D, I, J, and K gets a parent category of Category: Danmark which connects it to the Category Tree
• In order for these subcategories to sort into the proper group on the Category:Danmark page, you will need to use a sort key on the Danmark parent category on the category page for the category in column C, D, I, J, or K. To do this, copy the following text substituting the first word or two in Column C, D, I, J, or K of the spreadsheet for name.
7. Description area of Sogne Category Pages
• Columns L through P of the spreadsheet contain information to be used in writing a brief description for the sogn category page.
• Please include all the information. (Hopefully Columns L through O, Q and R will eventually be included in a Denmark Location Category Info Box while Column P will become the added description where needed.)
• Column Q contains names of categories which should be cross referenced to the category. Please copy the following text and include it at the top of the description, substituting the information in Column Q for the phrase "category name" - <br>:::Category: category name
• Add a Danish Wikipedia link in the description on the sogn category page. Please do not add an English Wikipedia link as the English Wikipedia pages for sogne are far less complete and far more likely to be inaccurate. The link address will be https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the information in Column R of the spreadsheet. Note: This part is in the process of being changed to the Wikimedia ID in the Location CategoryInfoBox which along with a language parameter for Danish, will create an easy to update link to the proper Danish Wikipedia Article.

Advanced Instructions for Locations Not Yet in the Spreadsheet

Please read and follow the guidelines for Denmark categories. If you do not understand them, please ask for help from someone on the Project Denmark Categorization Subproject.

2007 Reorganization

Regioner (2007-nu) / Regions (2007-present)

All categories have been created. The goal now is to move the pages under the previous categories in other languages or formats to the correct categories

Kommuner (2007-nu) / Municipalities (2007-present)

• This section is a low priority as few profiles will be created for people living in this time period given current privacy restrictions.

1970 Reorganization

• This section is a low priority as few profiles will be created for people living in this time period given current privacy restrictions and restrictions on availability of records.

Sandbox

Please do any experimentation with categorization structure, organization and naming ideas here. This is a place where we can try things out without tinkering with the real WikiTree Category Tree. Nothing appearing in this section should be viewed as approved or a pattern that should be followed in the real category tree. Everything hear needs to be discussed and approved before being incorporated into the real tree.
