History
Indre-et-Loire is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution in 1790. It was created from the former province of Touraine.
Geography
Indre-et-Loire is part of the current region of Centre-Val de Loire and is surrounded by the departments of Loir-et-Cher, Indre, Vienne, Maine-et-Loire, and Sarthe. The department is crossed by the Loire, the longest european river.
