Surnames that probably don't exist

If anyone can figure out what these names should (or could) be, it will enable us to get them connected to the main tree.

If you DO find the correct surname, be sure and check for duplicates, as there may be another profile already on WikiTree with the correct name.

For a true challenge

There are currently 685 unconnected profiles for early Buckfastleigh. They are mostly orphans, and most have the same single source. If anyone would like to have a go with these, please feel free and good luck!

Well done Devon Team, our numbers for 2024 are amazing!

Most notably are the location corrections, in which 8,621 were done since February! We were also in the top 10 for both connecting and unknowns.

Many thanks to all of you for your contributions, and wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Warm welcome to our newest member, Mark Isaac! Thank you for joining us, Mark :)
While connecting New Mexico, USA, author Frank Waters to the tree, I was curious about the surname of the rector who married his wife's paternal ancestor William Hyne. I wound up down a rabbit hole adding several rectors of Newton Ferrers. Thought I'd say hello!

Hi Karen!

I'm sorry, I'm just seeing this now but that is so cool - thank you for doing all that! It's amazing what rabbit holes can turn up sometimes ;)

Warm welcome to our newest member, Liza Gervais! Thank you for joining us, Liza :)
Thank you very much Frances! I hope to work more on my Buckfastleigh OPS.

Attention Devon Team!

I have added a "To-Do" list that Carol created for anyone interested. This was previously on another page which was basically forgotten.

Also, for anyone who would like to play detective, there is a list of surnames that don't appear to exist.

And for anyone feeling especially brave (or just plain bored), there are some early Buckfastleigh profiles that need some serious attention.

If you have anything that you would like to add to the table(s), please feel free to do so (or else just give me a shout).

Many thanks for all you do; our numbers have been amazing!

Fran :)

Hello Frances,

I have completed Crang-2 that appears in "All of Devon, birth locations that need amending". The profile now has a birth place in Somerset and death at Cardiff, as well as a fairly comprehensive biography. However, it still appears in the database search. I can't see a way to annotate the entry to say it is complete. Is there anything else I should be doing when dealing with any of these? Keith

Hi Keith.

No need to do anything else, The completed profiles will disappear automatically from the list at the next update, usually Tuesday or Wednesday. Thank you for working on these :)

Warm welcome to our newest member, Susan Squires! Thank you for joining us, Susan :)
Thank you. I look forward to working on the team. My interest in Devon is focused on the region around Exeter because this is the location from which my ancestors came. But I am open to expanding and learning more about other areas. Susan

HI. Could you arrange to upload a flag and Coat of Arms for use in immigrant movements please. I have a Flag loaded as https://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/Occupation_Image_Capture-6 for use in https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Elliott-15810 . It would make more sense to reference from your team this image. Thanks, Craig

Hi Craig, the full set of county flags for England and Wales are on the UK Flags page. The link to the Devon flag is https://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/UK_Flags-5 Edit: I have added the image to this page.

Thanks Jo, I have found other county flags on the County Team pages, which is very helpful, as the poor Wikitree Search and Naming policy ensures that you never find the Devon Flag unless it is somehow linked to Devon. The fact that it is call UK Flag X does nothing to help the search process, The same issue happens in the Australian Team, with Australian Flag x for each state.

My issue is that the site could be so much better, and easier to use, with a simple rename of images. I will get off my soap box now and thanks for the pointer to UK Flags. Will add that to the search list. Craig.

Hi Jo, this is a Devon flag for post 2003, created by Boy Scouts I think. It would not apply to most of the Devon profiles on Wikitree ! I had labelled it as post 2003 to avoid confusion and inappropriate usage, but it looks like somebody has changed that ( without collaboration or communication before editing )

Joe, Devon did not have a county flag of any description before 2003 until the county adopted St Petroc's cross. I had added all the adoption dates of all the England county flags back in July 2020 on the UK Flags page so that purists could choose not to use a recently adopted flag. Of the 40 county flags for England, 29 have been adopted since 2000 and all are recognised by the UK Flag Institute.

As Craig noted, there wasn't a Devon county flag uploaded to this page until about a month ago when I linked the one from the UK Flags page.

Yes. But it’s probably best to reinstate the “post 2003” to the flag’s name/ title to make it clear. Otherwise it could easily be used inappropriately on older profiles by mistake. And in the future there could be thousands of suggestions based on “wrong flag for time period”....

Found a unique surname (for WikiTree) in Parracombe, Devon: Bagbeer. One family I created was for this father Christopher: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bagbeer-2. I cannot connect them to others of similar spellings in Devon or the several in Somerset that I found, but it could be an interesting project for someone. There are a multitude of spellings of the name, some of which can be found on Christopher's profile.
