Ahoy Mates, Welcome to the "Died-At-Sea" home port.

The goal of this project is to remember and honor mariners and passengers who have died at sea. This includes mariners, master mariners, sailors and marines in the armed forces, passengers who pass away on a ship or who fall overboard, and victims of shipwrecks.

Right now this project has over two dozen members, including Dr. Marion Ceruti, mariner, seafarer, surfer, retired diver, survivor of storms and shipwrecks, and skin diver.

Criteria for profiles that belong in this project.

  1. Profiles of mariners and passengers who died on vessels of all kinds, to include military, commercial, and private vessels, both surface and subsurface.
  2. Any death that occurs on a vessel that is floating in (or under) the water constitutes "Died_At_Sea." If the vessel is in dry dock at the time when a death occurred, this is not a death at sea. Reasoning: If we exclude vessels in port on which occurs a death, we have to designate a distance from a port beyond which the death is eligible for inclusion on the list. This distance from port is not always known.
  3. Profiles of mariners and passengers who died in storms that grounded their vessels on reefs or on beaches.
  4. Profiles of mariners and passengers who died on vessels floating (or sinking) in lakes, such as the Great Lakes between USA and Canada, and Lake Michigan, USA.
  5. Excluded are deaths on airplanes that crashed into the sea, unless the plane had been assigned to an aircraft carrier or unless the plane were a sea plane designed to land on and float in the water.
  6. Military, commercial and sport divers who died on a dive that originated from a vessel platform. Deaths of divers who began their dive from any shore are excluded. (You have to draw the line somewhere.)

Members are invited to help with the following project tasks.

  • Identify profiles of individuals who have died at sea and add them to the project's list.
  • Add a "Died at Sea" designation or some other mention to appropriate profiles, as "Died at Sea" has not been accepted a a WikiTree category.
  • Expand the scope of this project to include other causes of death not listed above.
  • Add the tag, "Died_At_Sea" to your profile to follow developments in this project.
  • Take over the leadership this project if you think you can do it better than Dr. Marion Ceruti.
  • If and when a category for "Died_At_Sea" is allowed, add it to the appropriate profile above the biography header.
  • Assuming this project is allowed to have a sticker for project profiles, we need to select a design for the graphic. The text should read "*** died at sea." where *** is the person's name.

For Those Who Die At Sea

There is a special place in heaven for those who die at sea.
They're put onto a fast track to meet the Deity.
For sailors killed in action, while fighting their last war,
The angels bear them onward, home to the distant shore.
Marion Ceruti, 2023

The August 1871 Category 3 Hurricane, (SSHWS), Abaco Bahamas

Early on 14 Aug. 1871, the ship Tybee reported hurricane-force winds to the east of The Bahamas, signaling the presence of a well-formed system. At 00:00 UTC on 14 Aug. the third tropical cyclone of the season was noted, 210 mi (340 km) northeast of San Salvador Island, with 90-mph (150-km/h) winds. Tracking generally westward, the hurricane gradually strengthened. At 12:00 UTC on 15 Aug. the cyclone attained peak winds of 115 mph (185 km/h)—equivalent to Category 3 status on the modern Saffir–Simpson scale, which it maintained until landfall in Florida. Several hours later, the hurricane crossed the northern Abaco Islands and continued westward toward the Gulf Stream. Early on 16 Aug., a barque, the Bridgeport, measured a pressure of 952 mbars (28.1 in. Hg) in the storm's eye. As it neared eastern Florida, the storm curved slightly west-northwestward, before making landfall north of Hobe Sound at 02:00 UTC on 17 Aug. Source: "1871 Atlantic hurricane season," Wikipedia.org [3]

On 16 Aug. 1871, this category 3 hurricane hit the Abaco Islands, Bahamas and caused the death by drowning of 23 mariners, all reported in the District of Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. As is evident from the surnames of the crew, most, if not all of the mariners were from families who lived in the Bahamas for generations.

Francis Stirling (1839-aft.1880) HMS Atalanta, Royal Navy

On November 7th, 1879, Atalanta left Portsmouth under command of Capt. Francis Stirling, having a crew of 15 officers and 265 men and boys. Early in the cruise yellow fever broke out and the captain decided to run for Bermuda, where he arrived on January 29th, 1880. Two days later the ship sailed for home, expected to arrive in England on, or about, April 4th, 1880. From the date of her leaving Bermuda, January 31st, 1880, the ATALANTA was never heard of again. A terrific gale raged from the 12th to the 16th of February and it is possible that the vessel was overwhelmed by this. The Channel Squadron under Admiral Hood made an exhaustive search over a wide area but without result, and in May the Admiralty was compelled to conclude that the ATALANTA was lost.

Capt. Stirling left behind a wife, two daughters, and a son who was born the day the ship left Bermuda. There is a memorial to the 281 or so men that died at the St. Ann's Church in Portsmouth, England, and Capt. Stirling has his own memorial at the family graveyard at Muiravonside House (which is now a National Park in Scotland).

Not Directly Linked to the Disasters Project

Please note that the Died-at-Sea project has no formal linkage to the WikiTree Disasters project, as the goals of each projects differ one from another. However, some at-sea disasters could qualify for both. For example, the hurricane that killed Reverend Jeremiah Samuel Johnson Higgs also killed enough people to qualify for the Disasters Project.

For more information on the Disasters Project, see [22]. Moreover, the Natural Disasters Team may be of help in identifying wind-related disasters, such as hurricanes that happened more than 75 years ago. [23] N.B. So far, all profiles tracked here on the Died-at-Sea page happened over 75 years ago.

I would like to submit this FSP https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Crew_of_the_Norwegian_merchant_ship_Herstein as a start for the Montevideo Maru POWs who perished at sea on 1 July 1942. All but 2 of the crew of the Norwegian merchant ship Herstein were captured in New Guinea and died on the Montevideo Maru.

The Died at sea category has been added to each profile as well as the statement "...'s profile has been added to the Died_At_Sea project [1]."

I'm not sure I should have added the "Died at sea" category after reading the category page. It appears to suggest using the category "Lost at sea"

Thank you for your suggestion regarding the FSP regarding the Norwegian merchant ship, Herstein. The URL has been added to the WIkiTree links section. Also, I am not sure that "Died_At_Sea " has been accepted as a category, per se, but you can add the URL to any appropriate profile to show that the profile is related to this project. as you pointed out, some who "died_at_sea" actually were also "Lost_at_sea" (and presumed dead.) Please feel free to add your name to the members' list. Thank you very much for your substantial contribution for this project.

I currently run the monthly Montevideo Maru connectors challenge and vet 40 of the profiles each month that need connecting. I would be happy to add the 1055 names to your list if you would like. I can see you have 2 so far. The majority of the men are commemorated on the Rabaul Montevideo Maru War memorial in New Guinea which, although incomplete at present, I am also working thru as time permits. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Rabaul_Montevideo_Maru_Memorial. All of the POWs already have profiles. Perhaps the table on the Memorial could be adapted and added to your page when it is completed.

Do you have a sticker or at least a category that you would like added as I vet the profiles for each each months challenge?

How would you like your project added to these profiles?

Hello Amanda,

Thank you for your interest in the Died_At_Sea project. The Montevideo Maru is very relevant to this project. The project needs a more uniform and improved approach for situations like this, where many profiles are associated through events or locations. One solution is to divide the project into sections, keeping the current Wiki space as the top layer with links to other sites that contain the material in each section. In any case, I need a co-manager to help with the project as it continues to grow. Would you like to join the project as a co-manager, since you have good experience in this area?

So far, the Died_At_Sea project does not have a sticker or a category to add to profiles, although we have tried to get this earlier, with no success. The best way to tell if a project is eligible for inclusion is to compare the circumstances of death to the criteria posted on this page. WikiTreers who join the project can receive the Global project badge and follow on their profile "Died_At_Sea."

One idea to show that a profile is part of the Died_At_Sea project, is to include a statement stating that the profile is listed on the page, and then to provide a link with the URL.

If you have suggestions on how to manage the project, please share them.

Best, Marion

Hi Marion

I've thought seriously about your offer. At this moment in time I'm committed to the Monthly Montevideo Maru connectors Challenge which finishes at the end of the year. I could only give you a couple of days a month to work on your project and I don't think that would be fair on you.

I am happy to join the project and make some suggests if you want me too. If you like we could look at co-managing in 3 months time. You may not like my suggestions and as far as I'm concerned this is your "baby".

The more I think about a sticker I'm not sure it's a good idea. Some military profiles have 3 - 5 stickers already, 5 being the most any regular profile can have. I've been told extra stickers will be removed which could make others unhappy (I know I would be). A category is probably a better solution but that's just me.

Are you on Discord? We probably need to "talk" privately

I would like to join the group. My great grandfather died at sea at Sulawesi Tenjah Indonesia. The largest sea port in the 18th century was the Penobscot Bay Region in mid coast Maine. All of my Blodgett relatives were in the seafaring industry in one way or another. Others were also lost at sea. John Blodgett lost his life off the coast of England.

Hello Judith,

You are most welcome to join. Click on the "edit" button opposite "Members - Welcome Aboard." Then add your information to the list in the same format as the other entries. It's as simple as that.

I just added the profile for Henry Comstock (1838-1868), who apparently died on Lake Michigan on the steamer Sea Bird, when she burned...but, curiosity aroused, my research shows that it was the 10th worst disaster on the lakes The Seabird Shipwreck. How many of those might there have been?! So, now of course my interest is really piqued - a recreational sailor myself, I think I just talked myself into joining your project. 😏 (See how that happened?)

I want to run by Dr.Ceruti the profile I created of my ancestor Rubina Ciccibo (Ciccibo-1). I doubt there are many, if any WT profiles of Indigenous People who passed and were buried at sea.

Can you enter Nils Johan Nesse-1 who died in a storm going from Norway to Shetland. He was the 1st person to die at sea under the Shetland Bus group, a clandistine group of Norwegian seamen during World War 2.
Nesse-1 is not for Nils Johan Nesse.

It is the WikiTree ID for Katharina van de Nesse van Wulven b. 1310. The correct WikiTree ID is Nesse-31. I will enter Nils on the list, but you can do that too.

My father's youngest brother, Jack Collings Paige, a career merchant seaman, was also a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a submariner; with the outbreak of war imminent in 1939 he was called up to join HMS

Sterlet as the sub-lieutenant 2nd in command. HMS Sterlet saw successful action in the North Sea early in 1940 but on its way back to port it was either sunk by enemy action or hit a mine; in April 1940 the submarine was declared to be presumed lost at sea along with all its crew. He was just 29 years old. His profile is 1056.

Hello William,

Thank you for posting this information.

Would you like to join the Died_At_Sea project?

I have too many projects right now to join another, but this group seems very interesting. I have one relation I have found to have died at sea. Robert Mutimer (Mutimer-116). He died aboard the The Sir Robert Peel on his way to the States from England. He died on 19 Oct 1851, and the date is recorded on the passenger manifest. Feel free to add him to your project, and add any categories or tags you see fit.
Hello Melissa,

Robert's profile is now on the list. Thank you for the heads up.
