Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501 disappeared during a violent storm over Lake Michigan on June 23, 1950. Debris from the plane and victims was found floating on the lake, but the plane itself and the victims were never recovered. All 58 souls onboard were lost: 55 passengers and 3 crew members.

The Korean War began just after this tragedy, so it didn't get as much attention as would be expected.

The plane was flying at approximately 3,500 feet over Lake Michigan, 18 miles NNW of Benton Harbor, Michigan when the pilot requested a descent to 2500 ft. Flight controllers lost radio contact with it soon after that request. Though there was a widespread search, it was never found. The MSRA (Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates) conduct an annual search for the wreckage.

There is a mass burial site in memory of the victims at the Riverview Cemetery in Saint Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan.
