Film Facts
Plot: Fantasia consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Deems Taylor acts as master of Ceremonies and introduces each segment in live action interstitial scenes.
- The film centers around The Sorcerer's Apprentice, an elaborate Silly Symphonies short based on the poem written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The segment was developed as a comeback role for Mickey Mouse, who had recently suffered a decline in popularity.
- Fantasia was the Walt Disney's third full-length animated feature film. It was first released in theatrical roadshow engagements held in thirteen U.S. cities on November 13, 1940.
- The Sorcerer's Apprentice was the first appearance of Mickey Mouse in a Disney animated feature film. Voiced by Walt Disney himself, Mickey is the only animated character who speaks through the entire film.
- Fantasia was the first American film to use stereophonic sound and the first film recorded in Fantasound, requiring theaters to install costly new sound equipment before the film could be shown.
- With a running time of two hours and five minutes, Fantasia is the longest of all the Disney animated features.
