- Although the legend of Robin Hood dates at least as far back as the 13th century, most 20th century varsion were heavily influnced by Howard Plye's children's clasic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883). Disney's animated feature was also influenced by an earlier live-action Disney film, The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952).
- The film premiered at the Radio City Music Hall on November 8, 1973. Disney's 21st animated feature, it was the first to be developed entirely after Walt Disney's death. It was also the last Disney animated movie that all of Disney's Nine Old Men would live to see completed.
- This is the first "Walt Disney Animation Studios" film to feature an entire cast of "anthropomorphic" characters - animals living as humans do, with no non-anthropomorphic animals or humans in the film.
