Film Facts
Plot: A young knave named Wart, with the help of Merlin the wizard, learns the power of love, kindness, knowledge, and bravery on the road to becoming one of the most legendary rulers in British history - King Arthur.
The Sword in the Stone was the Disney's 18th full-length animated feature film. The film was released in British theaters on 12 Dec 1963, and in American theaters twelve days later on Christmas Day. This was the last Disney Studio's production Walt Disney lived to see.
The Sword in the Stone was based on the novel The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White, first published in 1938 as a single novel, and then again in 1953 as the first book of the tetrology, The Once and Future King, published in 1953.
The character of Wart (Arthur) was voiced by three different young actors - and it's very noticeable. Rickie Sorensen was originally cast in the role, however the long production schedule of an animated film meant that he aged up too much and his voice had clearly changed before he had completed recording his lines. Unable to afford a new voice actor, director Wolfgang Reitherman cast his own sons, Richard and Robert Reitherman, to finish out the role. The decision to keep the voice clips of all three actors in the film, sometimes even in the same scene, can cause a jarring viewer experience as Wart alternates between a squeaky child's voice and that of a teenager from one line to the next.
The Reitherman brothers had a third brother, Bruce, who would provide the voice of both Mowgli and Christopher Robin in future Disney features.
