Project box criteria

These instructions primarily refer to the Goodman Genealogy Fabrication. This genealogy has been processed and the directions will be updated if and when a new genealogy is added to the project.

All of the profiles in the Goodman category deemed to be fabricated are being adopted by the Project. Legitimate profiles that have been previously linked to the Goodman Genealogy should retain the category listing and should have an annotation in the Research Notes section explaining why the category is present on the profile.

This category is a location to identify the profiles of people whose biographies and family histories have been affected (or in some cases may have been affected) by Goodman Genealogy fabrications. "Affected" is the operative word -- listing in this category does NOT mean that the profile itself is fraudulent; hopefully it is listed because the fabrication has been identified and can be corrected.

Legitimate profiles

In order to add legitimacy to fake genealogies, their creators often mix in real sources and attach the fabricated profiles to real profiles.

The project box should not be added to legitimate profiles. However, the fraud category should remain on legitimate profiles and an explanation added as a separate section or in the research notes. Ties between fake and real profiles should be severed and an annotation of the break made in a separate section or in the research notes. To annotate a legitimate file that carries the category of a fraudulent genealogy you can use this text:

This profile carries the category of the Goodman Genealogy Fabrication because it has had been linked to another profile of that lineage or because this profile has contributions from a known author of the Goodman fabrication. This category placement does not mean that this profile is bogus but serves as a reference and as such it should not be removed.

If a profile tied to the fabricated genealogy is without sources it should be assumed to be fake also. If the profile is templated with the project box and is later to be found to be legitimate, the box can be removed and the profile restored to "legitimate" status. There are instructions in the biography template below that are included in such cases.

If there additional details in the profiles that are not supported by sources, cull them out and put them into a section:

=== Previous profile text ===
The text appearing below appeared at the creation of this profile. It has been retained solely as a reference in order to identify possible duplicate profiles on the internet. It should not be assumed that it lends any credibility to the existence of the person in this profile:

as you would for a bogus profile. We want to separate the good (sourced) information into the bio, and cull out the fabricated information to the special sections.

If you find bogus sources, do the same, add a section:

=== Previous Citations ===
The previously listed citations below are part of the fabrication and are not real sources and are retained solely for reference purposes:

For profiles that contain real and fake information, they will have a biography template that is a hybrid for those used in real and bogus profiles. See these profiles as examples:

Edward Goodman
Charlotte (Henderson) Goodman
Harriet Henderson Goodman
Montagu Keate Goodman

Questionable profiles

Profiles that might be real but cannot be determined to be fake or real should retain the Uncertain Existence category and should not be project boxed. In these cases, the profile should be brought to the attention of project leaders for further review.

Instructions for adding profiles

Notification

We would like to coordinate our efforts across several volunteers: please send a message to the project leaders Isabelle & SJ to let them know that you've started to help with profile conversions.

Add the project as profile manager

  • If the profile is orphaned, adopt it.

In the privacy tab:

  • Add wikitreedisprovenadjunct at googlegroups.com to the trusted list (be sure to change the "at" to "@".
  • Set the project as profile manager.
  • Delete yourself as manager or remain as co-profile manager if you prefer.
  • If the profile is not orphaned and you cannot add the project as PM, add the category [[Category:Goodman Needs Project as PM]] to mark it for correction.

Migrating the profile biographical information and sections

Use the template below to standardize the biography text when adding profiles to the project. Be sure to enter the category name in the project box, for now it is set to the Goodman effort:

{{Disproven Existence Adjunct|category=Goodman Genealogy Fabrication}}

result:
Logo for Disproven Existence Adjunct Project
This person is categorized as part of a known fraud or fabrication (Goodman Genealogy Fabrication).
Join: Disproven Existence Adjunct Project
Discuss: Disproven_Existence_Adjunct
  • Copy the template to the biography area and migrate the text (in italics) to the "previous profile text" section. If the bio does not have any biographical information, this section can be deleted. If the biographical data has been integrated into the research notes, add a note: "See research notes."
  • Move the sources to the "previous citations" section.
  • If the profile has a research notes section, transfer the research notes and add any comments that you think relevant to the profile and/or migration.
  • Throughout the profile biography, change any mentions in the research notes that this "might be" or is "suspected to be" a fabrication to indicate that it is a fabrication.
  • Remove links to all coats of arms: edit the photo of the arms to remove links to the profile - it is best to remove all details on the photo in order that it can be deleted.
  • Remove all links to photos that are likely copyright infrigements including, but not limited to, paintings, sketches, other art works, photos, landscapes, etc. If the photo does not have an attribution or source, it is best to delete it.
  • For profiles with photos of genealogies, maintain the link but place this message in the photo comments:
"This photo was uploaded in support of a fraudulent or fabricated profile. It should not lend credibility to the profile and is retained only as a reference to identify possible duplicate profiles on the internet."

Biography template

{{Disproven Existence Adjunct|category=Goodman Genealogy Fabrication}}
== Biography ==
=== This profile is a known fraud or fabrication ===
This profile has been proven to be a fabrication. Previously, it had several sources (listed below) that may or may not be genuine. The sources that may prove genuine are not associated with this profile. Because this profile has been proven to be a fabrication based on the sourcing and biographical elements presented at creation, it shall not be taken out of the Disproven Existence Adjunct Project without substantive evidence that it truly existed. If you wish to restore this profile from the disproven existence categorization, please open a G2G thread, add the tag "fraud" to the post, present your sources and argument, and then link to the thread in the profile notes. The profile will then be discussed by the community and a determination will be made if the profile should be restored.

Clarification for legitimate profiles:

- Use profile sections as described on this page.

- Add the Goodman Genealogy Fabrication (no S) category.

- Add the Disproven Existence Adjunct project account to the trusted list; do not add it as manager.

- Do not add the project box.

Thanks !

Yes, of course. I'd completely forgotten - yes, they'll need to be orphaned.

Thanks for the update for profiles inspired from real people, SJ.

One thing we have to bear in mind is that if the project is managing the profile, it is necessary to have the project box on it. So, do we orphan profiles like Henderson-5386?
